Of course, if you are not an adrenaline junkie then you can use it for simply pointing out of the bus window and capturing the landscape rolling by or simply take it up and down the high street to capture the bustle. The Akaso Brave 7 is meant to be an affordable contender that offers some premium features to users who either don't want or don't really need some fancy image stabilization or more than 50 shutter speed settings. As such, it's more than lived up to expectations. Action cameras are among the toughest cameras around, so we properly put them through their paces to make sure they live up to their rugged billing – and can shoot excellent video and stills, too. The Action 4 also benefits from DJI’s D-Log profile with 10-bit color. Based on our review, this dramatically enhances color depth and dynamic range, capturing detailed highlights and cleaner shadows. The downside of the larger sensor and wide 155-degree lens is an increased minimum focus distance, making it harder to shoot up close. Outright performance is also throttled slightly by the microSD memory. The remote (annoyingly) takes an older microUSB cable, while the camera and battery charger take the current USB-C, a hint that the remote is something of a hangover from an older model. The mounts are very similar to GoPro items, although the system isn’t quite as robust, allowing the camera to be twisted out with relatively little force, and a good fit needs two small sets of lugs to engage – something that could be easily overlooked in more extreme use.

Featuring 4K60p video, the Brave 8 can capture ultra-smooth moments in stunning detail. Meanwhile, the 8K time lapse feature gives users the ability to capture an epic hike or incredible bike ride in all of their entirety. You want perfect image quality: Cheaper rivals produce crisper 4K video, which can appear soft out of the Brave 7 LE. Many people use action cameras to capture footage of their adventurous pursuits, such as mountain biking, skydiving or snowboarding. The best action cams are also waterproof, so some outdoor enthusiasts employ them to shoot watersports or record underwater video while swimming or diving. Most action cams come with a range of mounts, which make it easy to attach them to your helmet, handlebars or even a strap which wraps around your chest. So you should always be able to find an attachment that suits.

For me, sound quality has long been the achilles heel of action cameras but then again, as a music producer and audiophile I would say that. So for me, it’s a pretty important thing to mention on my Akaso Brave 8 review. The answer comes down to what you plan to use the camera for and what level of quality you’re willing to accept.

Light up the night (big time) and charge your devices with this massively muscular flashlight and powerbank The 1/2.3-inch sensor is relatively small, but it can still capture reasonable raw stills and 4K footage at up to 30fps. We did find that overexposure is a risk in bright conditions, but colours generally prove rich, with sensor-shift stabilization doing something to combat vibrations. In its high-speed setting, the TG-6 can also shoot 1080p video at 120fps, but only for 20 seconds. The battery and micro-SD / USB-C port covers latch down in a similar style to GoPros, but I have found them increasingly hard to open with use, which appears to be down to surface corrosion. The supplied cage makes it a little hard to press the button with gloves on; it’s more difficult than a GoPro, but easier than the Insta360 One R. Settings are adjusted via the rear touch-screen, while the buttons on the side allow you to control the digital zoom, switch WiFi on for app control (iOS or Android), or swap to the front screen, which can be particularly helpful when setting up a shot or for vlogging (though the screen is square so you only see the centre portion of the 16:9 frame).

Akaso Brave 8 Action Camera Review – Better Than a GoPro? Akaso Brave 8 Action Camera Review – Better Than a GoPro?

You want to shoot flat footage: Designed for 360, the Max's 2D shooting modes can't compete with single-lens rivals. A hardcore compact camera that’s built for action, the Olympus Tough TG-6 has some of the best durability specs in this list, and still shoots decent 4K footage at 30fps.In this section of my Akaso Brave 8 review, we’re going to look at exactly what kinda usage the camera excels in. All the same, the Insta360 One R produces some of the best stills and video you can get from an action camera. Its 1-inch sensor also handles the crop of image stabilization better than most. A flexible 5K camera with solid low-light skills, the Insta360 One R is one of the best action cams around. We go through a similar process to analyze each camera's image stabilization, which is crucial to maintaining image quality during movement, and look at the quality of any special shooting modes too, including slo-mo and timelapses. On paper, at least, the Akaso Brave 8 looks as though it would compare relatively well with a more premium action camera such as the GoPro Hero 10, but in reality, it comes second in almost every department.

AKASO Affordable Sports Action Camera | Best GoPro Alternative - AKASO

You need perfect stabilization: Electronic stabilization is OK, but you'll get better performance by spending more. From bright sunlight to night-time, the Akaso gives good footage that’ll hold up fine in most YouTube videos. The accessories in question include the usual various mounts, a case, and a remote control in case you can’t or won’t use the voice Add in The Akaso Brave 8 also offers the scope to connect it directly to your iOS or Android phone for file sharing and editing. Video Quality Using two fisheye lenses to shoot in full 360, the GoPro Max gives you the flexibility to shoot first and frame later, with excellent six-mic audio to go with your video.

The Akaso has a claimed maximum field of view of 170°, which sounds good but in practice it’s tighter than the GoPro’s. In fact, I’m not sure how it’s measured, but the 170° field of view is slightly tighter than the GoPro’s 133.6° 16:9 wide setting, let alone its ‘Super View’ setting. Overall, I found the Brave 8's software and companion app to be unreliable to the point that it frequently would prevent the camera from being usable at all. The problems began with a tedious initial setup process which involved connecting the camera to the app (which took about five minutes just to connect) followed by updating the software which caused the app to crash twice before it was finally successful. After completing the setup, things started to get worse as the camera itself consistently encountered a few major issues, and there's a good chance that many of these are related to each other. Crashing/Unresponsiveness The supplied remote control is charged via a micro-USB port, which is a shame but not a problem assuming you have a cable at home, as one isn’t supplied.
