Because of the relatively vertical nature of the plant’s form, carrots can be grown fairly densely, and are therefore useful within the economy of space in a smaller growing area. That is, even a little garden can produce a lot more in carrots than by, say, lettuce or cucumbers. The seeds can be sown from early spring right through late summer for a harvest that will last nearly year round, so they form an essential part of nearly every vegetable garden. Flavour/Texture: I love the texture of roasted rainbow carrots as they are super tender but still retain a slight crunchy/chewy bite. It’s not mushy like boiled carrots! Together with the fluffy pearl couscous, it’s a great combination. The most distinctive colour range yet produced. Yellow, White, Purple, Scarlet and Orange Carrots. Refreshingly different for main meals and we invite you to give them a whirl although we have to add, they are no more beneficial to the eye-sight than the orange ones! How to Grow Carrots from Seed When the carrot seedlings are large enough to handle they will need thinning out. This is best done in stages. For the first thinning aim to leave one seedling every 2 to 4cm, pulling out any in-between. About four weeks later thin again to a final spacing of 10cm or 4inches, for finger or baby carrots a final spacing of 5cm will be adequate.

These rainbow carrots will be show stoppers at your table! Suttons have put together a fascinating blend of carrot colours to brighten up meal times and get the kids to eat their veg! 90 days from sowing to harvest (taken from our own trials and may vary in different areas). Nut free option: Omit almonds in the recipe for a nut free option. You can substitute with pepitas.Step 3: Plant the seeds – Make shallow trenches or holes in the soil, then drop the seeds in. Or, sprinkle them over the top, then gently work them down to about 1/4″ deep. Meanwhile in East Asia, the carrot was being cultivated and crossed there as well. The cultivation of these two types of the same species has led to two categories of carrots:

Heirloom rainbow carrots: Commonly available in Australia, heirloom carrots are not very big, and you get approximately 8-10 small carrots in a bunch. If you find them too small, I would get two bunches of rainbow carrots to serve 4 people. In a mixing bowl, place toasted cumin seeds, rainbow carrots, olive oil and salt together. Toss well.Flavour wise, I have kept it simple with roasted rainbow carrots as I want the natural flavours of the produce to shine through.

Root maggotsare ¼ inch long legless maggots that are yellowish-white in appearance. Their bodies are shaped like cylinders that taper towards the head. Adult versions of these larvae resemble small house flies. They feed on and destroy many root crops, especially during cold, wet Springs. If you have the luxury of growing carrots without the presence of carrot rust flies, you may still be concerned with soil dwelling insects such as wireworms, which seem to be true lovers of carrots. They are so attracted to carrots, in fact, that a full-grown carrot makes a very good lure for wireworms. Just bury carrots or carrot pieces in several areas around the intended seedbed, and mark where you bury them. If wireworms are present, you can then dig up the carrot pieces and easily remove the wireworms from the bed, or at least go a long way to reducing their population. Bambino: a true baby carrot, arrow-shaped and absolutely delicious. The skin is dark orange and very smooth, the flesh sweet and crisp. Very small core. Harvest it at 4 inches or let it reach 6; it matures in about 60 days, but can be harvested even sooner. Pearl couscous is larger with a more chewy texture and nutty taste than regular couscous. If you are looking for another pearl couscous recipe, you can try our deliciously easy Blistered Tomato and Basil Salad.Sow seed thinly in rows, 1cm (1/2 in.) deep, 30-40cm (12-16 in.) between the rows as soon as the danger of hard frost has passed. Try to get about 4 seeds per 2cm (1 in.). This variety is very broad-shouldered and bright orange. The stubby-shaped roots are ready to harvest in about 70 days and can be grown in heavy clay or shallow soils. ‘Bolero’ PLANTING: Sow from early spring to midsummer, ¾" apart , ¼–½" deep, in 2" wide band (about 16 pellets/ft.), or single rows 16–24" apart. For minimum soil compaction, use raised beds with 2 or 3 rows 16–24" apart, beds 5–6' on center. Sprinkle the soil surface to keep moist. Don't allow soil to crust before the emergence of seedlings which takes 1–3 weeks, depending on temperature and moisture. If necessary, thin young seedlings to ¾–2" apart, depending on type or root size desired. Keep weed-free by tine weeding and shallow hoeing. To prevent greening, cover exposed crowns.

Rainbow Mix is an interesting and delicious variety of carrot to grow. An array of vivid colours, each with a subtle difference in flavour, make a great temptation for the kids and cook alike. Guaranteed to wow and brighten any dish, carrot rainbow mix will mature uniformly and is a great choice.

Orange carrots are the standard but there are many delicious varieties that offer roots in shades of red, yellow, white, and purple. What are rainbow carrots? Sow thinly from mid March until the end of May direct into well prepared, warm, weed free soil at a depth of 13mm ( 1?2") (Germination 14-21 days). Thin by degrees to a final spacing of 7.5cm (3") between plants and 30-45cm (12-18") between rows. Use the thinning for salad carrots. Carrots grow best in a sunny position in well cultivated soil which has not recently been manured. Carrots can be grown all year round. Simply re-sow carrot seed regularly, every three of 4 weeks is ideal, for a year-round crop. An easy and rewarding crop to grow, carrots are great for encouraging children to eat their vegetables
