Description

It has been a great inspiration for teaching children to use subordinate clauses and using setting to convey emotions.

The story highlights the dangers and adventures the children encounter along the way and the challenges they face in South Africa at the time. Summary: A short, but engrossing journey of two siblings Naledi and Tiro, who journey from Johannesburg to Jo'Burg because their baby sister has become very ill. The story begins in a small, unnamed village where Naledi and Tiro, a girl and her younger brother, live with their little sister, Dineo, their grandma, and their aunt. From 1948–1994, South Africa made racial segregation the law of the land through a series of rules and regulations known as apartheid. After her father’s death, her mother, Mma, has had to work in Johannesburg for money for the family.

This edition of Beverley Naidoo's classic story includes a special "Why You'll Love This Book" introduction by Michael Rosen, former Children's Laureate. The author Beverley Naidoo has an interesting life story: born into a white family in South Africa, she took part in the anti-apartheid movement as a student, was jailed for 8 weeks, then left the country for the UK.We work closely with publishers and authors to ensure that we offer the best books on the market for your child. Now Beverley Naido herself was born and raised in South Africa (in 1943), and yes, the author has readily admitted never having been taught to question Apartheid (and the general racial intolerance towards Black South Africans) either in school or at home. Naledi and Tiro's family is so poor that they can't afford to go to the doctor when Dineo falls sick. He celebrates Journey to Jo'burg for being the first childrens' book about the lives of black African during apartheid.
