House of Lies and Sorrow: Fae of Rewyth Book 1 Kindle Edition

This is a fantasy book that you cannot help but compare to ACOTAR. The similarities are glaring. Except this world, as fantastical as it is, never quite cements itself as a truly realized place. And I think a lot of that has to do with the language choices our characters make. Half of the time, they speak as colloquially as we do, and the other half they’re trying to speak in that fantasy way - you know what I mean. Make up your mind! The exposition could’ve been filled with more description of the world and of the characters. Even now, having read the whole thing, I only vaguely know what some of the characters look like. Do not ask me for an accurate rendering of the setting. there are possible war vibes going on with another Fae territory and Rwynth, possibly, unsure in this book but it sounds like the king wants to go to war.

I finished this book only because I kept telling myself it couldn’t get any worse, and it also never got any better. I’d love it if the author took her time to hone the writing craft and spend some time editing and making things flow (and actually make sense) before publishing. I was really excited to read this and it got off to a really great start. After the first few chapters I really started to have a problem with the pacing of the story though. The characters weren't getting to know each other and the story wasn't really progressing. It felt very stagnant until the last few chapters which felt rushed.Lastly the “slow burn” didn’t feel like a slow burn. There were enough moments to build up to a true connection between these two for me. It seemed like Mal’s growing feelings made sense but Jades really didn’t for me and when they finally share a physical moment the communication from Jade didn’t feel true to character. Fred Melamed as Harvey Oberholt, the father of Clyde, who has a difficult relationship with his son and is dying of cancer This author’s writing style reminded me of my own, so I felt cozy and at home. However, a lot of the events felt too drawn out. The need to constantly swap pov’s I think hinders the novel a bit making a singular scene go from edge of my seat thrilling to “how much longer is this chapter?” Overall, I think there is a lot of potential here. I just think it needs a bit of minor work. Michael Cudlitz and Stacey Hinnen as Kohl brothers, businessmen who have business plans in Cuba and want to acquire K&A I kept reading in hopes it would get better and then once I realized it wasn’t, I was so close to the end I thought I might as well finish it. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Do you think you know everything there is to know? I was looking for a place to grieve and be alone with my thoughts, and the house of lies and sorrow seemed like the perfect place for that. It was dark and depressing, and it matched my mood at the time. What do you think makes this house so special? Good intrigue, moves at a fast pace which sometimes a little too fast which I felt lost a little bit of lore and magic that could have been embedded Into the story.

Prince of Shadows“. Dunkel mit schwarzen Flügeln und einer Gedankenbasierten speziellen Gabe… einer seiner Brüder heißt Lucien 😅 The time line of the book is all over the place. It would have benefitted from someone writing out a time line of events and asking "does this make sense". The wedding day is a great example. We start at pre-dawn, take a potion to go to sleep for 2 hours, spend time getting ready for the wedding, a very short wedding happens, at the beginning of reception it is stated they won't stay long, three songs are danced to, a few short conversations, and now it is midnight? I loved Mal he came off as arrogant and careless towards Jade but as the story progressed and I read more from his side I began to understand his initial facade. Even from the beginning it was clear he was trying his best to create distance between himself and jade for her safety. I loved how he didn't know her or care for her (so he said) but wouldn't allow anyone to disrespect her, it was very admirable of him and it gave me hope that even if he turns out to be the monster that he is claimed to be that he wouldn't be one to jade, that he would do anything for her. Expecting the worst, she fights tooth and nail to survive and stay alive, with some help from some unexpected friends.
