I had a chimney sweep come and he refused to remove it to sweep the chimney as he said it was not fitted correctly and it was dangerous. I had a chimney sweep come when I bought the house and he found the chimney was not swept before the log/coal burner was fitted. Door seals should be replaced every 12 months, and window seals every 18 – 24 months, to ensure the stove keeps running safely and efficiently. The template can be printed onto a thick sheet of paper or you can glue / tape the paper onto a piece of stiff card and then cut out the appropriate template for the width of the channel. Designed for versatility, our heat resistant glass is suitable for various applications including wood burning stoves, multi-fuel and gas stoves, cookers, fires, and ovens.

Seal your woodburner and flue with high temperature sealant

Stove manufacturers recommend door seals are replaced every 12 months, and window seals every 18 – 24 months, to ensure the stove keeps running safely and efficiently. The depth of the channel can be measured by printing off the width/depth template ( download the pdf document here ).

They also ensure efficient burning of the stove by controlling where the air is allowed to enter the stove. No wood-burning stove installation is complete with a trusty tube of high temperature silicone sealant. To avoid smoke seeping into your room, you don’t want any gaps through the components of your stove system where it might get out. If some adhesive residue is left in the channel, take an old screwdriver and carefully remove the adhesive until it is possible to measure how deep the channel is. If the old seal can be molded back to a circular shape then place a ruler across it and see how wide it looks to be.

Typical sizes are shown on our products page along with a photo showing how they wrap around the glass. The glass-fibre door and window seals will need replacing when they are worn and no longer able to maintain an airtight seal’. The sealant can withstand temperatures up to 300°C, which makes it the ideal solution to the problems outlined above. We are dedicated to providing expert advice and top-quality products to meet all your stove glass needs.Poor quality adhesives can lead to early failure of the seal because the adhesive will deteriorate with the heat from the stove and allow the seal to become loose or even partially drop away from the door. This is due to a reduction in the pigment used in the manufacture of the product and no cause for concern. As the door is closed tight the seal is designed to flatten and fill the gap between the door and the stove frame. High Temperature Sealants offer flexibility when it comes to sealing any leaks, joints or gaps in your flue system. Any gases and smoke produced by your woodburner need to be burnt in the firebox when flammable, then make their way up your flue pipe.

Seals around the window glass are not subject to the same forces of compression as seen on the door and generally speaking they do not need to be replaced quite as often. With this type of seal we would ask you to send us a photo or a piece of the old window seal so that it can be matched . We would certainly recommend that if the stove is used frequently, the seal should be inspected and replaced as soon as the door doesn’t compress the seal as well as it used to. Of course, there are lots of other uses for high temperature silicone sealant that don’t involve your woodburner. For obvious reasons, you will want to make sure that the stove and flue is correctly sealed before starting to use it. Sometimes, even this information is not always enough because the stove designer may have chosen a seal with a particular compression. Stove manufacturers choose various methods and materials for cushioning and sealing the high temperature ceramic window glass in the stove door, most commonly used are flat width plain and ladder tapes which are clamped in place with a metal strip. Equally, to avoid causing damage to your stove and get the most value from the fuel you burn, you do not want air to be able to get into your stove through such gaps and cause the appliance to operate at too high a temperature. Last year we bought a used wood stove that looks like it was homemade (no manufacturer identifier markings).
