In the 19th century Wilhelm Gesenius speculated an origin from Arjanwartah, an unattested Sanskrit word without any clear cognates, supposedly meaning "holy ground." [15] [16] Some Armenian historians, such as Ashot Melkonyan, link the origin of the word "Ararat" to the prefix of a number of placenames in the Armenian Highland ("ar–"), including the Armenians. [17] [18] The mountain is known as Ararat in European languages, [19] [20] however, none of the native peoples have traditionally referred to the mountain by that name. [21] This mountain was not called by the name Ararat until the Middle Ages; early Armenian historians considered the biblical Ararat to be in Corduene. [22] [23] Ağrı and Agirî [ edit ]

Mr Noah Built an Ark

According to the Book of Genesis of the Old Testament, Noah's Ark landed on the " mountains of Ararat" ( Biblical Hebrew: הָרֵי אֲרָרָט, hare ararat) ( Genesis 8:4). [90] Many historians and Bible scholars agree that "Ararat" is the Hebrew name of Urartu, the geographical predecessor of Armenia; they argue that the word referred to the wider region at the time and not specifically to Mount Ararat. [c] The phrase is translated as "mountains of Armenia" ( montes Armeniae) in the Vulgate, the fourth century Latin translation of the Bible. [94] Nevertheless, Mount Ararat is traditionally considered the resting place of Noah's Ark, [95] and, thus, considered a biblical mountain. [96] [97] Kurkjian, Vahan (1964) [1958].
