Description

Born in Lillebonne, Normandy, in 1940, Ernaux sees herself as fundamentally a “child of war”, conscious from a young age of history with a capital H. Both the large-scale and finer textures of everyday life are of equal concern to her. “Maybe that’s why I’m so obsessed with the quest for a collective memory,” she suggests.

ISBN 978-0803228153.The French writer Annie Ernauxwas born in 1940 and grew up in the small town ofYvetot in Normandy, where her parents had a combined grocery store andcafé. Her setting was poor but ambitious, with parents who had pulledthemselves up from proletarian survival to a bourgeois life, where the memories of beaten earth floors never disappeared but where politics was seldom broached. In her writing,Ernauxconsistently and from different angles, examines a life marked by strongdisparities regarding gender, languageand class. Her path to authorship was long and arduous. It was an attempt to offer a faithful account of an entire generation in France – from the outbreak of the second world war to the birth of the internet – braiding one woman’s impressions of the era (her own) through a broader swirl of imprints made by advertising, world events, and period-specific cinema and music. Ernaux did no research for the book; she simply, she explains, activated her “internal cinema” for each specific period she wanted to recall. Her process places extraordinary faith in the power of subjective memory, an approach she began in 1983 with A Man’s Place. She has expressedreservations about the potentially “falsifying” force of fiction. Her fidelity is above all to accuracy, to describing events she has observed or closely experienced herself with as much precision as she can summon.

The book is also a bit of a meta-novel. She tells us she is writing the book as therapy to get over him. There's an extended analogy between her obsession with writing a book and trying to make it perfect with the way she tried to make her relationship perfect.
