The reports go a step further, suggesting that there is an intended, in-universe reader for this text, and you can’t help but wonder who that might be. Rath has a lot of fun showcasing these Knights throughout Kingmaker, and you end up getting a good look at the unique machines, which are bounded to their pilot, and which contain the spirts of all their previous riders. As Black Library readers will be aware, there’s more to the grim, dark future than just endless battlefields. I loved all three assassins, and I hope there will be plenty more stories (both short stories - like the three which already exist - and further novels) in this series.

Once an operative is in the field, he must be able to cross the galaxy from one side to the other, by means fair or foul. It’s a true artefact of the conflict – with this map unfurled on your desk, you’ll feel like Rogal Dorn himself as he strives against the odds to oversee an impossible defence. Across the millennia, occasions where the despatch of an operative has not resulted in the desired result are extraordinarily few and far between. In addition, the experiences and memories she obtained from the link impacted on Sycorax’s psyche and ensure that she gets some fantastic interactions with Rakkan, while also gaining a better understanding of the people and machines she is trying to manipulate.
