With 2007′s An End Has A Start – partly recorded in Ireland with producer Jacknife Lee – Smith alluded to family tragedy (most movingly on top 10 single Smokers Outside the Hospital Doors). Eventually we are introduced to Alex Canning, investigating the life of Owen Goddard, the editor of the title, with whom Christopher was acquainted twenty years previously when he was writing his novel after quitting university. They haven't sold out at all, so they're big influences not just in songwriting, but the way they've protected themselves as musicians and as a band. An equally well received second album, An End Has a Start, followed on 25 June 2007, which included singles such as " Smokers Outside the Hospital Doors" and the eponymous track.

I, of course, secreted these columns away in a special hiding place, because I assumed that these letters were the only spanking literature that existed in the universe. This was so different to the characters of Small Pleasures, so desperate not to act in a way which was “shabby” to one another and possibly a reflection of the time period – my recollection of the 1980s was that is lauded self-interest above self-sacrifice, perhaps. It has, however, left me willing to read another Chambers if I come across one, not desperate to catch up on her back catalogue.

In fact, Chambers is exquisite at those strained but still loving family relationships both here and in Small Pleasures– Jean Swinney and her mother were a wonderfully realised pair, as were Christopher and both Gerald and Carol.
