When you remove the rail, it will probably leave holes where the nails or screw used to be. Fill these with lightweight filler such as Polycell No Sanding Polyfilla. You... You will need to rub down using 'wet and dry' abrasive paper using water with a little detergent added. The surface should then be rinsed and allowed to dry before repainting. If this is impractical due to the size of area affected the area could be horizontally lined with lining paper and then repainted.

Now that you’ve stripped the peeling paint and carried out what’s necessary to action, it’s time to apply your fresh paint. Be sure to give it two coats of paint for best results. When using filler it is always good practice to thin down the first coat of emulsion when painting the surface. If this is not done, what tends to happen is...

Begin by removing all the loose paint you find on the walls by using your wall scraper. It’s recommended to have a good sharp edge high-quality scraper to get the best results.

Start by cleaning debris away from the area and allowing it to dry thoroughly. Use Polyfilla EasySand5 or Universal Ready Mixed Filler to fill the hole. Sand the surface: Once the Polyfilla has dried, use 120 fine-grit sandpaper to smooth out rough spots. Next is to prime the affected surface using a performance wall sealer. Once coated, leave the wall to dry.Another alternative, the areas showing raised roller marks is to start again by sanding down after the paint is completely dry. Then once dry, wipe down the areas where you sanded and add another layer of fresh paint. The Polyfilla must be kept from direct sunlight in a cool and dry place with temperatures under 70°F (21°C). To further help maintain the product’s lifespan, make sure that the lid is properly sealed after each use For standard embossed we recommend 8 pints/4.5L for 4-5 rolls. For heavy embossed we recommend 7 pints/4L for 3-4 rolls....

Hope you get on well but if its a near full skim you need then I don't think Smoothover is the most cost/time effective way, small patches yes, full skim no. (that probably goes for easyfill/skim etc unless you have all the right gear & can use it well) Humidity: High humidity levels can prolong the drying time of Polyfilla. If this is the case, try to find a room with lower humidity to work in or use a fan to circulate the air. The short answer is no, you don’t need to do this. You only need to scrape off those areas needing assistance. Paint that has simply failed like peeling off, curling up, and any loose paint, will be the case. Due to time & dust issues (2 kids to think about) I will probably go to a plasterer for the rest downstairs but it has been an interesting project (apart from the peeling paint bit) Ensure you scrape the paint up until you reach the surface. Hold the scraper securely in your comfortable hand and carry out the same arm movement throughout. The motion is to stroke upwards and to repeat the same motion for best results. If any wood comes up with the paint, stop. There’s plenty of power tools you can use for your walls. Especially if you have lots of flaky patches of paint scattered on your walls. The shelf life of an opened can of Polyfilla depends on several factors, such as storage conditions, type of Polyfilla, and any contaminants. Once opened, a container of Polyfilla can last up to three years if stored in the right environment. Heat gun – Compact and sturdy power tool. The objective from the heat gun will cause the temperatures of the paint to wilt away. This won’t have an impact on your household walls. I ended up with a really good smooth wall using a 500w halogen light for seeing all the imperfections but I did find though that although I had covered all the digs/dents when it came to painting I had pin holes that I thought would fill with paint but didn’t (tried Polycell base coat & Polycell flexible ceiling paint but they didn’t really make much difference) Overall, the drying time for Polyfilla depends on various factors such as temperature and humidity. It generally takes 30 minutes to an hour for Polyfilla to dry in normal conditions.

Tip: You can get better and specific questions and answers if you answer the questions above 1 I don't like my artexed walls & ceilings, I want them to be smooth, - how do I achieve this? Another factor is the quality of paint used on the wall. Low quality or expired paint can peel much easier and a lot faster than fresh, high-quality paint.Paint flaking can occur with a number of different factors. Most commonly, improper application to the wall and too much hard grain is used.
