As a member of the British Committee for the Reunification of the Parthenon Marbles who recently argued (and happily won) against Jonathan Jones at the UCL debate which he mentions in his recent article ( Let’s not lose our marbles over the British Museum boss’s remarks, 29 January), I presumptuously assume I am included in his description of “the passionate proponents of Greece’s claim”. He goes on to say that people such as myself “need to explain how their argument differs from any other variety of nationalist populism”. I thought I had done just that at UCL, but I shall do so again in case he missed my point. According to several theories, the blue and white colors of the Greek flag are said to symbolize the blue of the sea and the white of the waves, representing the country’s maritime history and culture. They are also associated with white for purity, and blue to the God in the sky, who helped Greece defeat the Ottoman Empire. In short, feelings of national pride can easily obscure the real challenges and prevent a people from looking at itself in the mirror. When pride and dignity permeate a nation's life, they lead leaders and citizens to making choices that sustain sound public finance and doing all that is needed to maintain the competitiveness of the country and the robustness of its institutions. Taking to the squares is easy. Doing the hard work that is required to enable someone to experience sustained pride is far more difficult.

In that vein, a somewhat anglocentric view of the world is betrayed when Jones laments that Keats was not rich enough to visit Greece and see the marbles, while not seeming all that concerned with the millions of people – poets among them, I’m sure – from Greece, or anywhere else for that matter, who will never be able to afford to “expand their horizons” by travelling to the world museum, which just happens to be in London. gay If you’re a fan of the TV Show “The Big Bang Theory,” you probably already know what Vexillology means: it is basically the study of the flags of the world, and the character Sheldon Cooper is the perfect example of a flag aficionado. The grandest spectacles unfold in Thessaloniki and Athens, where children of all ages, clad in matching uniforms, march from Zappeion to Akadimias Street. The procession passes by the Parliament at Syntagma Square, paying homage to the Unknown Soldier monument and the countless souls who laid down their lives for their country. The streets and balconies brim with spectators, their hands fervently waving Greek flags. Traffic Regulation Amid Celebration The first blue and white flag in Greece appeared in 1807, and it was simply a white cross on a blue square. After many remodeling in both shape and color, the colors blue and white were officially decided for the flag in 1822. The sabotage of the Gorgopotamas railway viaduct by Greek partisans and British agents just over two years later and is considered to be a spectacular success in the history of European underground operations. A major supply line to the German and Italian forces in North Africa was cut. The day is celebrated on National Day of Resistance every November. Many of the partisans had been bare-foot. However, what is less appreciated in Greece is what makes national dignity possible and, like debt, sustainable. It is one thing to shout in the squares of Athens against the "predatory" creditors and quite another to productively wonder how national pride can be created and sustained. Typically, protests calling for dignity tend to come late, in the aftermath of national calamities. With the start of the new year, Athens Pride has given its logo a new vitality and motion, strengthening our presence in the digital realm as well as asserting our visibility in the public space.
