Codenames Review - Teams Make Word Association Awesome - Just Push Start". www.justpushstart.com. 23 April 2017 . Retrieved 2022-03-24. Each turn, the spymaster gives a verbal clue containing only a single word and a number. The verbal clue should represent agents of own color in some way. For example, for the word cards ‘beach’, ‘whale’, and ‘water’, one could give the clue ‘ocean’, as these things are all related to the ocean. The number represents how many words match that clue. The single word clue must be related by meaning, so it cannot be purely phonetically related. It also cannot be or contain any uncovered word. If an invalid clue is given – the clue is explicitly invalidated by the opposing spymaster – the turn ends immediately and the opposing team gets to randomly reveal one of their own agents. Duet actively works against these moments, and for all the ways it deepens the original idea I can’t forgive it for its humorlessness. For starters the word set is more difficult. Getting a solid clue connecting two of them is a good aim. Three at a time is outstanding. The difficulty curve confirms this as even the most difficult missions will have the players average just over two successful guesses per turn to win. The early missions you can get by with about 1.5 words per turn.

When a player touches a word, its identity depends only on the other player's side of the key card. Codenames starts with a five-by-five grid of cards, each card is printed with a single word. Players of four or more divide into two teams, the red team and the blue team. One member from each team per round is designated as the clue giver or, as the rule book calls it, “spymaster.” Running into an innocent bystander ends the turn immediately, and running into an assassin ends the game. On the other hand, finding a green word gives your partner a chance for another guess. One Clue, Multiple Guesses The Codenames series of games are interesting for me due to the fact that I just didn’t get the appeal at first. When the original Codenames came out it became very popular at local gaming events and a weekend didn’t go by that didn’t have a large table of multiple people playing the game. Your partner can make another guess if the first guess was correct. (You do not give another clue). The second guess is made the same way as the first, and you mark the word according to the same rules. If that guess is correct, your partner can guess again. And again. Your partner can make an unlimited number of correct guesses. Each round one of the two teams gives a clue. Clues are given in the form of one word and a number, where the number represents the number of words on the table that match that clue. The other team then uses these clues to select one or more of the word cards, trying to find the ones associated with their agents while avoiding the assassins. The game also includes a pad that shows a map of the world, with a number of cities highlighted and routes between them. This pad is used for the mission mode.

Each team chooses one player to be their spymaster. Both spymasters sit on the same side of the table. The other players sit across from their spymasters. Zimmerman, Aaron (July 7, 2016). "The "Board Game of the Year" winners have been announced". Ars Technica . Retrieved October 7, 2017. A word that is covered by a green agent card does not need to be guessed anymore. In particular, if you guess a word that looks green from both sides of the card, your partner will cover it, and neither of you will give clues for it anymore. (If this happens, do not tell your partner that you were also giving clues for that word). Note: You cover a green word with a green agent card even if it wasn't one of the words you meant. Do not let your partner know. You should act like you meant that word. You can't say part of a compound word on the table. If EARTHQUAKE is visible, you can't say earth, quake, earthy, or quaking. But hearth and ear are okay.

The difficulty level to win the game is harder than the original - but there are ways in the rulebook to play an easy mode Gamer Network Limited, Gateway House, 28 The Quadrant, Richmond, Surrey, TW9 1DN, United Kingdom, registered under company number 03882481. Players attempt to guess which of the word cards in the five-by-five grid correspond to their agents. Each side takes turns to play as the clue-giver, conjuring up one-word clues that refer to one or more word cards in the grid. The clue-givers both have access to one side of a double-sided solution card that shows which word cards their partner or teammates need to guess. The other side must then choose which card or cards they think the clue-giver is referring to.

You can stop guessing at any time, but usually you want to guess as many words as the spymaster said. Sometimes you might even want to guess one more:

Your clue must be only one word. You are not allowed to give extra hints. For example, don't say, "This may be a bit of a stretch…" You are playing Codenames. It's always a bit of a stretch. de Veyra, Jeeves (December 14, 2016). "Codenames board game gets local edition". ABS-CBN Corporation . Retrieved March 21, 2018. Codenames is a game played by 4 or more players in which players are split into two teams, red and blue, and guess words based on clues from their teammates. [2] One player from each team becomes the spymaster, while the others play as field operatives. [3] The end goal is to place all of the team’s agent tiles. To succeed, most of your clues need to connect two or more words. Don't be afraid to give clues that are a bit of a stretch. Your partner knows that not every clue will be a perfect match. Just beware of the assassins.
