The cinematography by Bill Pope ( Spider-Man 2, The Matrix) is fantastic and one of the highlights of Army of The Star Trek: The Motion Picture – The Director’s Edition: The Complete Adventure Limited Edition is a 3-disc set here in the States that includes the DE in 4K, a newly-authored 4K of the previously-released Theatrical Cut as well as the Special Longer Version (included via seamless branching), and a Blu-ray full of bonus content that I’m told includes basically everything ever created and released for the film on home video. (I’m awaiting confirmation of the exact contents from the studio.) But it does NOT include a Blu-ray of the DE itself, nor are Blu-rays of the Theatrical and SLV versions included. The DE is available separately on Blu-ray, and obviously the Theatrical Cut Blu-ray was included in the original 4-Movie Collection from last year. It’s too bad that all versions of Army of Darkness couldn’t get the same kind of treatment as the Theatrical Cut, but even so, this is still a fine set. And the quality of the UHD presentation is definitely worth the upgrade. It’s not definitive, but it still comes highly recommended to primitive screwheads everywhere. While it is disappointing the 4K UHD disc only provides the theatrical cut, the four-disc set includes the director's cut, international cut, and Shout! Factory’s Scream Factory imprint previously released Army of Darkness in a three-disc Blu-ray edition featuring the theatrical, director’s, and international cuts of the film, and now they’ve upgraded the theatrical version in 4K based on a new 4K scan approved by director Sam Raimi, director of photography Bill Pope, and editor Bob Murawski. The director’s cut doesn’t seem to have had any work to it, although the International cut features a 4K scan from the interpositive. audiences a taste of what would come as an action-director with Spider-Man. Raimi penned the script alongside brother Ivan Raimi world and Army of Darkness has the right ingredients for terror and mayhem. The score has enormous fun with the time-travelGot all that? If you’re a long-time fan of the film, I’m sure you could easily follow all of that. If you’re like me, though, and only had a passing acquaintance with Army of Darkness until now, let me lay out the specifics of this four-disc set: with these materials for Universal Studios. The only cut of the feature-film available with everything in 4K resolution was the theatrical cut. and is a great release for fans of the film. The release also includes an interesting "feature" (so to speak): unique disc art different There’s a massive amount of supplemental material to dig though. Disc One contains no extras but Disc Two features Medieval Times: The Making of Army of Darkness, a great documentary by Red Shirt Pictures on the making of the film. It contains interviews with many of the people involved with the production, including actors Bruce Campbell, Ted Raimi, Timothy Quill, Richard Grove, Bill Moseley, Patricia Tallman, Angela Featherstone, director of photography Bill Pope, editor Bob Murawski, production designer Anthony Tremblay, music composer Joseph LoDuca, costume designer Ida Gearon, special make-up effects artists Howard Berger, Tony Gardner, Robert Kurtzman, Greg Nicotero, “Pit Bitch” performer and effects artist William Bryan, mechanical effects artist Gary Jones, first assistant director John Cameron, visual effects supervisor William Mesa, and last, but not least, stunt coordinator Christopher Doyle. Also included is the original ending, the original opening, and a set of deleted scenes, the latter two with optional audio commentary by Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell (the original ending features the commentary only). They also reveal that, " We [Scream! Factory] will be doing ARMY OF DARKNESS early next year, which will be the first title we have done from scratch", since there's no other 4K transfer for the film as of yet, so they'll be doing the restoration themselves. players) in the history of genre filmmaking. The collaborations between Campbell and director Sam Raimi are obviously some of the most importantNow then, the big release news today is that Warner Bros.
