They should be planted in full sun or partial shade, and are tolerant of most soil types, but will benefit from having compost or manure tilled into the soil prior to planting. Internal top diameter 45cm. Capacity: 43 litres. However, I have used ware potatoes before as seed potatoes. Our seed potatoes chitted prematurely, so we thought we would try some small ones from a bag we bought at the supermarket. All you have to do is ensure the potato plants have the right conditions to grow and produce crops.

Before covering the potatoes in compost you may want to add some fertiliser to help the potatoes grow. There are a lot of fertilisers around (some organic, some not) that you can use for potatoes. I use Envii Seafeed Xtra, it’s organic and it’s amazing. In a large container or compost bag, this will be a lot more dirty. Most of the potatoes will be near the bottom, so you will have to empty the entire pot or bag. When you grow potatoes in containers, you have to get ready to get your hands dirty. The spores are airborne, so can infect other plants nearby. They can also get washed into the soil, where they will infect the tubers and destroy your crops. One of the biggest causes of death in new shrubs is drought stress, so keep it well watered until it’s established. Newly planted conifers need very careful watering during the initial stages. They are drought proof once established and should not need too much watering, but they are very vulnerable to stress from drought if they are not watered thoroughly. An olive tree will bring an unmistakable touch of the Mediterranean to your British garden with its textured bark, silvery-green foliage and well-branched habit. Keep your potato plants well watered, but don’t overwater them. Indoors they won’t need to be watered as much as outdoors in summer. Make sure that your pots have good drainage, potatoes won’t grow in wet soil. There are regulations for seed potatoes that ensure that diseases and pets are not spread. So you can be sure that commercially bought seed potatoes won’t be infected with any diseases.

Olive trees are slow-growing and relatively small, and, with relatively few demands on the soil, are among the most suitable trees for growing in containers. Late blight is a fungal disease and it is most prolific in warm, wet weather, especially in late summer. This is bad news for British gardeners, given that our summers have become warmer and wetter in recent years. Brown patches may occur on conifers. There are a number of causes; pests such as the cypress aphid and scale insects can be treated with sprays and foliage removal. Parasitic wasps can also be brought into greenhouses as a biological control for removal of scale insects. Potato Red Due of York– this first early variety has a red skin and yellow flesh. They are ready to harvest in 10-12 weeks. These are my favourite potatoes for chunky chips. Depending on the time of year we may supply freshly potted rootballed trees, if this is the case these trees can be treated as any potted conifer.Another compact option, this cultivar is especially cold-hardy and also has a vertical-branching form. Dimensions: 12cm diameter top, 7.7cm diameter base and 10.7cm depth. Capacity: 0.735 litres. Recommended use: For pot bedding and young plants. A few conifers such as yew and Thuja, can be pruned hard and will regrow. Most conifers will not regrow from old wood if you prune into it, so take care.

Dimensions: 55cm diameter top, 41cm diameter base and 37.5cm depth. Internal top diameter 50cm. Capacity: 60 litres. Be aware that an olive tree will eventually have to be housed in a very large container, around 200L or more. 4) Avoid Manure And Water-Retentive Compost A 5L is Ideal for the production of bigger shrubs with a larger root capacity, these can be seen across our nursery but generally found within our garden centre sales. If you are successful then you may become the happy owner of a very special heirloom tree that will be passed down from generation to generation.

Removing weeds as soon as they appear is a good way of ensuring that valuable moisture is not lost. Mulching also reduces moisture loss from the top layers of soil. Never spray with fertilizer or feed during hot, bright weather or you will risk scorching the leaves. Spray in overcast weather instead. There is no cure for this disease, once a plant is affected, destroy it and all the potatoes that might be in the soil. I recommend that you dilute the fertiliser to 60-70% of the instructed strength, apply it well away from the crown and water the plant both before and after the application.
