The twists and turns of the plot establish Salander as the protagonist of the book and impels the reader to rethink his assumptions about her in the first book. The image of Lisbeth Salander as schizophrenic, psychopath and mentally incompetent is dashed and the reader is introduced to a more complex side of her mind.
