This is the first of the tools that look like they’re all from the same factory, but it proved to be among the most accurate, only pipped by the Clarke. It was very accurate at the lowest level and only marginally outside the four per cent tolerance at the other two. It’s easy to think of torque wrenches as tools only for professionals, but even a simple job like changing a wheel is done better – and with less risk of failure or damage – if you use one. Begin Media LTD, trading as Begin Motorcycling, is an Introducer Appointed Representative of Seopa Ltd (FRN: 313860). The 3.95 – 22.5 Nm provided makes this wrench ideal for areas of the bike where less clamping force is required. Engine casing bolts, for example, usually need between 8 – 10 Nm. This wrench, combined with one of the higher-value tools on our list, will allow you to open and clamp almost every bolt on your bike.

Torque isn't just the figure you struggled to understand as a child but knew more was better in a car, it's also something that every nut and bolt in your car will have a predetermined figure for to keep it correctly in place. If you intend to do even basic maintenance on your motorcycle, don’t try it without a cheap torque wrench. You must know how much force you’re applying when tightening things on a motorcycle. What Sizes and Values?

The best torque wrenches

The tool has a 24-tooth ratchet, but its biggest problem is having no imperial scale, ruling it out for owners of many British classic cars. It was always within tolerance, but it was not enough to overcome the price – around twice that of very similar tools. The 30NM – 210Nm rating means this is unsuitable for the lightly clamped bolts and fixtures on a motorcycle. But at that low price, you can buy a second tool for those bits. Recommended. For cylinder head bolts, triple clamp bolts, and cylinder heads, a ⅜ inch wrench is required. For minor stuff like oil-filter cover bolts and engine case bolts, you need a 6mm wrench. Things move slowly in the torque wrench world and, like the Draper, this is a returnee from our last test. Despite its age, it was the most accurate in the tests, easily inside the four per cent tolerance and just one per cent out at the 60 per cent measure.

It has a fine, protected, 72-tooth ratchet, and metric and imperial scales. However, the former – and most common – is a nightmare to set, with graduations down to two decimal places. Over-tightening your axle nuts can impede movement. Loose axle nuts can result in unintentional wheelies and horrible accidents.Along with the 300, this is the other half of the Halfords line-up, dealing with lower settings. It was a shame to see it uncomfortably outside its three per cent tolerance at the lowest setting, but it was easily inside it at the mid level and a touch over at the maximum.

Everything in your car that’s fastened will have a set torque setting set by the manufacturer that needs to be torqued to the correct setting. From something as simple as a piece of trim on the interior to important bolts that hold the wheels on and keep the engine held together, they all need to be torqued. If you’re planning on doing any task like this you must use a torque wrench so you don’t do some serious damage to your car as you rebuild it. The best hand tool brands for torque wrenches Torque is a force applied at a radial distance and is a measure of how tightly you do up a bolt or fixing, and while screws may not need an accurate measure of torque application, most nuts and bolts do. The only way to make sure you have it correct is by using a torque wrench. The push-through drive means it can work in both directions, and it has a very easy-to-use setting window. It was just outside its claimed three per cent tolerance at 20 per cent, but within it at the higher readings. Not cheap, even at this discounted figure, but very good. The wrench comes with a numbered calibration certificate. It also features a reversible ratchet head, so you don’t need to flip it over to reverse the direction.
