The RoboMaster S1 is the first robot of its kind from DJI, and while it might not fly like the majority of DJI products, it’s an engaging robot that helps kids learn to code–as well as being amazingly fun to play with. It contains 24 kinds of module parts, including auto go, obstacle avoidance (via an ultrasonic sensor) and a line-tracing module (via infrared photoelectric sensor). We played with the line following mode; we tested the cliff sensor and noted that Artie Max robot avoided toppling off the end of our table. Beyond testing the tutorial modes for the advanced JAVASCRIPT, PYTHON, and C++, these modes were beyond the limits of our family’s ability. However, we appreciated the opportunity to continue to grow/expand our abilities. The first thing I want to mention is that Artie requires 4x AA batteries, which are not included. Syd is almost 7, and she is a big fan of STEM so I knew she would love Artie almost as much as I do. There’s a setup guide included with Artie, which is great for someone who is confident with computers. However, most kids will need help with this stage.

What is it?

Coding aside, the S1 provides access to a range of games–some multiplayer, with more coming soon–allowing you to go head-to-head with other S1 units. Parents have said there has been a great reaction from their kids, they want to play again and it is easy for the children to use and remember. It is also great for the imaginations of kids while teaching them how to code; the noises and visuals are entertaining. Unlike some of the others toys and games on this list, the Anki Cozmo isn’t primarily designed with coding in mind. First and foremost, it’s a charming, fun, interactive robot, but that appeal could make it a great tool for engaging kids in its coding mini-games.

Syd has spent hours inputting random code into him, to see what happens. It’s a brilliant cause and effect type toy, and a great introduction to the idea of coding. No actual coding happens, though. All told, we love our Artie 3000 Drawing and Coding Robot, and I can see him getting lots of love over the Easter Holidays! Learning Resources MagiCoders Coding Critters brings a creative, sensorial and magical perspective to coding and STEM. With a spell book you can cast spells on Blazer the Dragon or Skye the Unicorn and you can also design your own limitless coding challenges with the 22-piece pet playset (including a treasure chest, large ball, fireballs, a castle piece and many more). It’s great for teaching children spatial awareness, sequential logic and basic coding skills.The idea behind Bitsbox is that kids should actually learn how to write code. This compares to using a visual modular language such as Scratch, which teaches “coding logic” but not how to write in the coding language. We spent ages trying in vain to get Artie 3000 to connect with my MacBook Pro. In the end, we resorted to Syd’s Windows laptop, which worked first time. I guess Artie isn’t a fan of fruity gadgets! Once he was connected, Syd and I set to work on the first of the 3 lessons included with Artie3000. As the video shows, you can choose to select the pre-installed commands, or do the actual coding yourself. We did the pre-installed command first, then Syd and I tried our hand at coding. The well-crafted, colorful beasts can do many things. Blazer can follow a ball, patrol the area, dance, turn their horns into a volcano (Blazer) or rainbow (Skye), change their moods (grumpy, angry, surprised, tired, excited, silly), chase their tails, sing, make themselves shy and take a nap. Both can be fed treats through code.
