Gans is clearly a devoted cinephile (which is backed up by his contributions to the extra features) who puts a lot of thought into his mis-en-scene, referencing a wide range of influences to create stunningly cinematic imagery. As Fronsac and Mani investigate the incidents around the area, they become inclined to believe that this ‘beast’ is far from the large wolf many claim it to be and it may, in fact, have a human owner controlling its actions.

The 2-disc Blu-ray includes deleted scenes and many extras, while the 4-disc 4K UHD release also includes the theatrical cut and eight featurettes – while all formats include the English audio and the French audio in Dolby Atmos. Yes, most of the material has been available elsewhere but, to the best of my knowledge, we’ve never had a UK release with anywhere near this amount of supplements. It is worth remembering that the film had already benefited from digital colour grading at the time. Note: The text below was first used in our review of the exclusive French Blu-ray release of Brotherhood of the Wolf which StudioCanal produced in 2008. The new interview with Gans runs for close to an hour and a half, so offers a lengthy and in-depth look back at the film and its success. The director went on to make a video game adaptation movie of Silent Hill (he is currently working on a sequel) and the live-action version of Beauty and the Beast. Currently, I have in my library only this very old French Blu-ray release that StudioCanal produced in 2008. An ACES colour-managed workflow was implemented for the Dolby Vision grade with Bigueur, then completing a scene by scene trim pass. Colours are rich, details are pin sharp, yet it still has that sumptuous, natural shot-on-film look.

but it's been reported that only the colours were tweaked and, purely through the level of finesse they are now able to do, that this could better blend in antiquated effects which still sometimes stand out, but are far better integrated than ever before. Please note that some of the screencaptures that appear with this article are taken from the 4K Blu-ray and downscaled to 1080p. The Director's Cut of the film runs at approximately 151 minutes and has all of the omitted scenes added to key sequences throughout the film. While the film is a little bloated and overlong at 2 hours and 24 minutes the changes in the story arc and the mystery unfolding always keep your attention.
