For instance, a Critter from Newleaf may be able to be played into any Green Production construction, no matter what it is. The new cards do feel slightly more powerful but they are more expensive in most cases and you can only have 3 golden occupied tokens which was a great design choice or they might all be too powerful. From Everfrost to Bellsong, many peaceful years have passed in Everdell — but the time has come for new territories to be settled and new cities to be established. You can then play this card for one less resource in a future turn exhausting the token which flips back over when you pass to the next season.

There is a lot more card cycling in this expansion from the cards themselves and the station board so you need to find ways to discard cards from your hand so you can keep drawing them.It also adds several new mechanics such as the Station side board, visitor cards, tickets, and reservation tokens.

The Reservation Tokens allowing you to reserve a Meadow or Station card for yourself is similar to mechanics in other games, so it’s nothing revolutionary, but it can change the dynamic of the game significantly. The Station board gets three cards from the main deck and the visitor cards which act as other ways to score points at the end of the game.The game increases in weight slightly with more considerations on your turn even when only playing with the station board and new cards. To use a Ticket the first time, a player flips the Ticket over, then moves any of their deployed workers to another open space. For me this module is take it or leave it, it is so small that it can be easily incorporated but I don’t miss it if it is not there.

The purple cards will just help you gain points whilst the red ones can offer you different unique worker placement spots in your city. If you are looking to bring a bit more variation to lower player count games of Everdell, then Newleaf is really a need rather than a recommend.

Newleaf constructions allow certain types of critters to be played into them again with a golden token. The game setup and teardown time increases slightly with so many more cards to shuffle in the main deck and other items to randomise on the new board. The reservation token can be used as a new action on your turn to take a card from the meadow or train station and place it on top of it in front of you. Everdell is one of my favorite games, so when I get to add more expansions and get even more Everdell, it’s great!

Bellfaire adds several modules to the game including unique player powers, a new market location and rules to support 5-6 players. This has greatly improved some of the player powers which let you have a bigger hand size or go above hand size and discard down. Everdell is now a very vast game, there are so many big box expansions, and the collectors box that holds all the content is the size of a small car. Newleaf and Bellfaire add quite a bit to the game while still keeping the focus on the core gameplay loop, while Spirecrest and Pearlbrook shake things up significantly.Players looking for solo play or a 2 player game, check out the Everdell Collectors Edition which features Rugwart and his rat workers or the Mistwood expansion, featuring Nightweave. That’s a lot of dilution, but the golden occupation tokens and new effects that help cycle the deck faster keep everything balanced.
