Hangzhou became a distribution centre for many types of wares, with merchants from Fujian and Guangdong importing exotic goods to the city including spices from South East Asia. The supporting character Ephraim Hardcastle (the landlord of the Bag of Nails pub, whose name is revealed in chapter eight) is a reference to the newspaper column of the same name in The Daily Mail as written pseudonymously by Nigel Dempster and subsequently Peter McKay. Professor Moriarty's motives are uncertain, except that he wishes Holmes to rid the world of the House of Silk, whose activities apparently appall even him.

Some of his servants regard her as bringing a needed breath of fresh air into the rather stiff and sorrowful Carstairs household. Writing in what must be 1915 — when the great detective is dead and his elder brother, Mycroft, retired — Watson announces that he is leaving instructions that his account of these horrors remain sealed for 100 years. Horowitz's Watson cleverly excuses himself right at the start from any complaints about style or content by reminding us of Holmes's oft-stated judgment of the stories: "He accused me more than once of vulgar romanticism, and thought me no better than any Grub Street scribbler.The Song Dynasty was a very prosperous period in the history of the development of traditional porcelain crafts and the official kiln had a very high level of craftsmanship.
