Except, it’s completely dark, and my car is making this noise that sounds like loose coins tumbling around a dryer drum. I’m not a car whiz, but I’m thinking that’s not a good sound for it to be making. My favorite little Toyota Corolla, the car that has been with me since I was in high school, the car I was sitting in when I first heard my song on the radio at age eighteen, the car that I drove to Phantom Records and signed my recording deal ten years ago is reaching its expiration date. It can’t die, it still has the smell of my old volleyball kneepads ingrained in the fabric.

Finally, I wanted to shake her and say, “Make up your mind already!” The characters are fine and mostly likable, but their inability to communicate honestly and openly with each other was frustrating. Instead, their actions were often manipulative and passive-aggressive. But, in the end, Claire discovers she can have the best of both worlds.

Christmas Gifts

Claire's best friend and daughter encourage her to take time for herself in Rome. And she does. She immerses herself in the culture and attempts to learn more Italian language by conversing with locals. She enjoys her surroundings, slow pace of life and the food. Quirky nuns at the convent become friends and wise mentors. When Marcus arrives she is flooded with emotions and snippets of her past. He has always loved her since the day he first saw her in college. They explore their friendship in their middle age in the Eternal City. Did they make at least a minimum research of the real italian culture?not even a little. The "Italian" wedding had nothing italian! The vase, the dancers, I don't even know where's that from, I"m guessing grece but I"m not even sure. NO ITALIAN DOES EVER HAD A WEDDING LIKE THAT. I mean, if u want to make a film about Italy get your information right first. Sincerely, a married italian My conclusion: it has a lot of the puzzle pieces of a good novel, but they just didn't fit together. It also startles Marcus, a once-buzzy actor, devastatingly handsome, who is eternally in love with Claire. Marcus has come and gone from Claire's life since college but now reappears in Rome just as she's about to decide what's next. It makes me wonder if I’m too good at hiding. My days go like this: I smile this way at this person and nod. Yes, thank you. I smile that way at that person and nod. Yes, of course I can do that. Susan gives me a script perfectly crafted by my PR team and I memorize it. My favorite color is blue, much the same as the Givenchy gown I’ll be wearing to the Grammys. Why yes, I do owe much of my success to my loving and devoted mom. A day doesn’t go by that I don’t feel incredibly blessed to have this career and my amazing fans.

Then there's the storyline of Marcus. Claire finds herself falling for Marcus while they are both in college. She makes a big scene of rushing up on stage and kissing him during a play at the end of their senior year of college...and then she runs off, decides not to become a nun, has a one-night stand, and gets pregnant. Through the decades she's remained emotionally close to Marcus, but they've never gotten together, despite obvious mutual interest. The explanation given is that Marcus had a health scare when they were in college and Claire promised God that she would not get involved with him if Marcus could continue to be healthy. I'm sure there are ways to make this a plausible plot point, but it just didn't work. Amelia can’t resist falling for the cozy town and her grumpy tour guide, but even Audrey had to leave Rome eventually. I requested this because I was intrigued by the setting--I have a lot of fond memories of Rome--and because the premise of Claire hanging out with three nuns in a convent to figure out her relationship to religion feels unique. While the descriptions of Rome's food, culture, and beauty are compelling and lush, unfortunately, I disliked the characters. (Well, all the characters except the nuns. The nuns are hilarious, and I would love to hang out with them.) It also startles Marcus, a once-buzzy actor, devastatingly handsome, who is eternally in love with Claire. Marcus has come and gone from Claire’s life since college but now reappears in Rome just as she’s about to decide what’s next. And so, at this reunion, a new project with a new prompt, less question, Claire thought, than curse:When in Rome is a delightful story about new beginnings, second chances and searching for one's calling. At the age of 52 Claire is at a crossroads and her wish to start over leads her to Rome. As a real estate agent her passion is old buildings. But she has more than one reason to visit a lovely convent. As a teenager becoming a nun was her dream and calling but she hadn't pursued it. Is the answer now obvious?
