In reality, taking up the mantle of Galileo requires not just that you are scorned by the establishment but also that you are correct [note 1] — that is, that the evidence supports your position. In fact, before Newton (and curiously the vortex theorists) none of the extant tidal theories explained the two tides per day. The chief problem with the Galileo gambit is the failure to understand the difference between a well-established scientific law and religious dogma. The Sarpi/Galileo theory however also didn’t explain the correlation of the tides with the phases of the moon; at least the lunar theory (Kepler and others) didn’t suffer from that defect. It is doubtful if the award of the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize to Al Gore and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change went to the right awardees at the right time.
