I love how it takes the age-old trope of true love's kiss and twists it, and I love how the 'deal with a devil' theme is carried out in a fresh way. Maybe I kept comparing this to Kingdom of the Wicked in my head because the two books have a pretty similar concept and I had just started reading that sequel, but I felt like this was a lot weaker than KOTW. She wants Evangeline to attend the Nocte Neverending, a celebration of sorts where the prince in the north, Apollo, will try to find a bride at a series of balls.

I really enjoyed Caraval but I felt like this book was a whole lot of questions and not enough answers. this book made me remember that my answer to the age old question, “if you could live in any fictional world, which one would it be? she always just wants to believe the best in everybody and she’s sometimes always a bit too trusting. Not sure if I will continue with the series when the rest come out because honestly I kind of was just left wanting more from this, and not in a good way really? The Fates weren't dangerous because they were evil; the Fates were dangerous because they couldn't tell the difference between evil and good.

Once Upon a Broken Heart follows Evangeline, forced to make a deal with the Prince of Hearts for true love. there wasn’t any repetition and it isn’t mentioned constantly or anything which definitely shows character development since she’s written caraval. I enjoyed the Before part, as After Evangeline Drinks the Poison is where Stephanie Garber seems to have forgotten the novel she promised to readers, and began writing something else entirely. This story held me captivated from the very first lines and didn't let me go until I closed the back cover. I didn't really find much quote-worthy material, but every separate sentence had a beautiful athmospheric structure.
