Axtell, reminded of his murderous record in Ireland, declared: “God did use me as an instrument in my place for the suppressing of the bloody enemy. John Hutchinson, for instance, was a Nottinghamshire landowner who was very involved in the trial but pretended at the time of the Restoration that he wasn’t. The lack of a strong leader following the death of Oliver Cromwell led the British almost to revert to default, thinking: ‘Well, we’ll have the monarchy back.

In the midst of his ordeal, Harrison punched the executioner – who was so embarrassed at the insubordination that he quickly killed him off. In the past, he was a wandering trouper and musician who grew to be a notorious arcanist (or wizard), known as the infamous "Kingkiller". After seven years of fighting in the bloodiest war in Britain’s history, Parliament had overpower King Charles I and now faced a problem: what to do with a defeated king, a king who refused to surrender? Instead of a tale of two moral monsters fighting it out, we are given a rather unconvincing tale of good versus evil, which while it makes for a compelling read, it also fails to paint an entirely accurate picture.

Thomas Harrison, for instance, had been a prominent figure under Oliver Cromwell and was known to have been unpleasant to Charles I in the final months of the king’s life. Alternatively, you could stop by the oddly triumphalist exhibit at Cromwell’s house in Ely – a museum which allows you to vote on whether Cromwell was a hero or a villain by sticking magnets to a wall. Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda was attached to serve as executive producer of the television series, along with John Rogers, Jennifer Court, Robert Lawrence, and Rothfuss, with music composed by Miranda. By a stroke of misfortune, the good people of England were rather put off by the excesses of the Cromwell regime, stoking the royalist fan base which had never been truly eliminated.

We see Cromwell’s body exhumed and posthumously executed on the twelfth anniversary of the king’s death. Spencer also includes a collection of full-colored images and portraits in the center of the volume, which helps to put faces to the many names of the regicides that arise throughout the work. A tribunal of 135 men was hastily gathered in London, and although Charles refused to acknowledge the power of his subjects to try him, the death sentence was unanimously passed. This non-fiction work has as its theme the execution of deposed English King Charles I, the subsequent Protectorate of Oliver Cromwell, the Restoration of the monarchy and the resulting manhunt for those responsible for the late King’s murder. You have to remember that the Restoration happened so quickly that things unravelled for the regicides very fast.

Charles Spencer was educated at Eton College and obtained his degree in Modern History at Magdalen College, Oxford. Throughout the book, we see the scapegoat mechanism at work, as former soldiers and military men who fought against Charles in the English Civil War used the men who put him on trial as a type of sacrifice for the new monarch. Inthe meantime, Cromwell’s power-base, the New Model Army, had kept busy, notably in Ireland, where six of the eight regiments were commanded by regicides – “killers of the king”. The accounts are vivid with details and the personalities beg to be further explored or to become the subjects of historical fiction novels.

This history book by Charles Spencer (yes, _that_ Spencer family), covers the events surrounding England’s seventeenth century parliamentary rebellion in which a segment of MPs decided that King Charles the First was unredeemable and had to be deposed. Seventeenth-century England suffered from civil wars, the trial and execution of King Charles I, and the ‘rule’ under Oliver Cromwell as a result of these behaviors. He was hanged, drawn and quartered at Tyburn, because after the first few hangings at Charing Cross, the people living there complained of the smell of burningentrails. This is not entirely Spencer’s fault, however, since this balance between brevity and detail is a difficulty that any historian would have to face.

Killers of the King - Bloomsbury Publishing

Without a doubt, “Killers of the King” highlights a captivating angle and thesis focusing on the men responsible for the execution of King Charles I. Along the way, we are able to learn a few details about their multifaceted (and sometimes divergent) motivations, and what prompted them to make their decision to execute their sovereign. Following this the book moves on to the events that lead to the crumbling of the newly emerged republic, the chief one being the death of Cromwell. For example, as time goes on and more men are killed, the public begin to feel more sympathy and there is less thirst for blood. The author then progresses to the Cromwell years and the Protectorate and eventually to the Restoration (the award of the throne to Charles I's so Charles II).While it could have been more fully fleshed out (Cromwell is mentioned more in passing and the preceding Civil War is only briefly summarized at the start), the book is relatively short (at 300 pages) and Spencer does a commendable job in focusing on those who had a hand in the death of the king. However, there is no snow landing on the hood of the car or on Marcus's jacket, indicating that the snowfall has been added to the scene as an after-effect. One of their number chose unwisely to venture further afield, only to die riddled with bullets in a Lausanne churchyard, while others kept running as far as New England, only to find that the new king’s revenge followed them there.
