My daughter was in night nappies when she started going to school and I WON'T apologise for it - no one. Had it been otherwise, then Joe’s schooldays could have been dealt with in one chapter, and then we would have read about the couple’s marriage when he was at university and the birth of their first child soon afterwards.

For the next hour, Nick sits patiently and listens as I pick my way tentatively through the maze of the past eight months.Throughout the book, readers get many intensely detailed scenes of their sex life and it seemed, to me, as if Joe was almost relishing in it.

I was a 16 year old boy in 1991 and a (female) teacher who was 49 at my boarding school who taught the younger boy’s not me. I'm wearing it on a November day with my week-long Oxford scholarship trial and exams looming, and the tension is hard to shake off. What little there is comes in a nine-page addendum to the main text, with a new character that appears out of nowhere to tell Joe that he had been the victim of abuse, having been only “a kid” at the time of the first encounter. Aside from the obvious levels of horror at Ali's abusive behaviour, I found myself repeatedly cringing throughout the book.Gibson’s decision to delve into the explicit details of the affair has sparked controversy and criticism. The result is a heightened intensity, the kind more frequently found in fiction, in which Gibson and Miss P are the main characters, and those in their orbit more opaque.

The novel revolves around a teenage protagonist, struggling to navigate the challenges of growing up in a harsh and unforgiving world.

By doing so, we can engage in a meaningful dialogue about the responsibilities of authors, the expectations of readers, and the ethical considerations that underpin the relationship between the two. Instead, they were confronted with scenes of explicit sexuality, violence, and substance abuse that some argue were gratuitous and unnecessary. Some of those females were considerably older than my son, so I suppose sons really do take after fathers, or maybe young men are really only interested in quantity rather than quality.
