Rather than having each piece separated in the box, which would require more costly packaging, Mackintosh decided to have each piece individually wrapped in coloured paper and put into a decorative tin. We finish with one of the 'original two', Roses, which launched in 1938 - two years after Quality Street first came onto the market. Manufacturers Cadbury, Nestlé and Mars have provided the ‘big 4’ of selection boxes for years on end and left many families disputing which is the best chocolate in each tin. Cadbury Mr Big King Size x 90g Chocolate Bar Cadbury's Mr Big got its name from its size, it really is BIG! By using a tin, instead of a cardboard box, Mackintosh ensured the chocolate aroma burst out as soon as it was opened and the different textures, colours, shapes and sizes of the sweets made opening the tin and consuming its contents a noisy, vibrant experience that the whole family could enjoy.

Quality Street, Heroes, Celebrations and Roses are all under the spotlight for this particular examination. Hearst UK is the trading name of the National Magazine Company Ltd, 30 Panton Street, Leicester Square, London, SW1Y 4AJ. Onto the box that led to the development of Heroes; Celebrations launched two years prior to their Cadbury counterparts.

Anyone who's been to a supermarket lately will have not failed to miss the masses of chocolate boxes and tins stacked high down the aisles ahead of the Christmas rush.

The largest of the regular candy bars produced by Cadbury's in Canada, Mr Big is super-long vanilla. Unsurprisingly, given that the brand has been around for the best part of 85 years, there have been many flavours that had to be sacrificed to make way for the current crop. There are two possible origin stories when it comes to the name of the brand; initially they were thought to be named after the English packaging equipment company "Rose Brothers" based in Gainsborough, Lincolnshire, that manufactured and supplied the machines that wrapped the chocolates. With the time for treating ourselves with these family-sized boxes well and truly upon us, we thought it would be a good idea to go back in time and list all the discontinued chocolates that could once be found underneath the lids.

The list of discontinued brands is far less extensive than its three competitors with just two losing their place over the years. As for the brands that’ve been lost, there have been a surprising amount given only being in existence for just over 20 years. Looking like an ideal choice to dip into a cup of tea, the moreish biscuit has been released in a dark chocolate version before, but this is the first time it's with iconic Bournville chocolate. This boxed confectionery was originally branded as Miniature Heroes and currently manufactured by Cadbury.
