I’m currently following this very old tutorial by Andrew Price on making an explosion and around 16:14, he sets up textures in the Texture panel to make the smoke simulation look like an explosion by mixing two Voxel Data textures together. Place the environment in a perspective that you like and import ( Edit > Import) the PNG of the explosion that you saved previously. It looked to me like that deep red colour was from a fire, so it could have been from burning materials, furniture or some sort of dye or paint. It could also have been from the amount of dust in the area.
