But look at the aspirations of that rabbit and look at his failing. A little life trying. And all the time it was hopeless. But the rabbit didn't know that. Or maybe did know and kept trying anyhow. But I think he didn't understand. He just wanted to do it so badly. It was his whole life, because he loved the cats.” Replicant Snatching: "The Father-Thing". When an alien takes the place of the protagonist's father, he eats his insides, leaving only a dry, dead skin behind. The actual plot (incorporating a small parade of peripheral women, the way a James Bond novel might) is not all that complicated, it may just seem that way due to some of the sci-fi elements and jargon. None of that should throw you. You. Do. Not. Need. To. Slow. Down. Your. Reading. To. 'Get. It.' All. All that you need to understand will be revealed, just keep going.

For classical composer John Dowland, teardrops open the soul

Cheerful Charlie – Computerized game-person who gives advice. Not that far removed from kids continually playing and interacting with computer games on their handheld devices. Quizás no es tan buen libro como 'Ubik', pero se nota que es del mismo autor, y eso es una garantía, al menos para leer algo bueno, bien escrito y con una trama compleja (tanto que no se si la he comprendido del todo).Love isn’t just wanting another person the way you want to own an object you see in a store. … Love is — she paused, reflecting — like a father saving his children from a burning house, getting them out and dying himself. When you love you cease to live for yourself; you live for another person.” In reality, it’s rare for a person, coming out of a long legal process where they are found innocent, to be embraced by society; often, they remain fairly anonymous and sometimes people maintain suspicions that the person is guilty (under the “If they were arrested they must be guilty” theory). A free world emerges I had been told that PKD's books, esp. those near the end of his writing career (which would include 'Flow...') can be abstruse and vexing, but I didn't find that to be true. I found the writing to be, by turns, engaging, elliptic, straightforward (in its own way), (sometimes menacingly) poetic, funny ("It's probably the man from upstairs. He borrows things. Weird things. Like two fifths of an onion."), teasing, of course tense, and (sometimes) even quite tender (esp. the penultimate chapter; sooo good!). But, frankly, those that enjoy him will overlook all of this, because one doesn't read PDK for plot coherence, visionary futurism or character development. He has this quirk in his brain that lets him spin out freakishly interesting puzzles of an existential nature.

God in Human Form: Emmanuel, the main character in the novel The Divine Invasion, is, in actuality, the Judeo-Christian God—and he lost his memories in a car accident. book, stemming from the same forces which had assaulted me at the close of 1971. { PKD to Joan, 5-20-77} PKDS-4 5:

The police maintain a lot of agents among the students agitating for a final shootout with the police...which the police and nats are hopefully waiting for."

Nipple and Dimed: Played with in The Zap Gun. It's mentioned that in the future society, family-friendly media may freely display naked female breasts (and even animate them in titillating ways), as long as no more than one breast is visible at a time. Fantasy Kitchen Sink: Had a habit of mashing all sorts of sci-fi tropes together, even when they're superfluous to the "main" sci-fi conceit/narrative. For instance, "Flow My Tears," the Policeman Said has a random psychic cab driver, and The Man in the High Castle mentions off-world colonies despite being an alternate universe The '60s. Dar gândește-te la ce-ai pierdut din viața ta. N-ai iubit niciodată un copil? Îți atinge inima, partea cea mai profundă a ta, cea care te poate ucide cu ușurință. Our Hero Is Dead: Deliberately and effectively subverted in Flow My Tears, the Policeman Said, where the main character is killed halfway through and the plot basically falls apart for the rest of the novel. It seemed to him as if he sat behind the tiller of his custom-made unique quibble, facing a red light, green light, amber light all at once; no rational response was possible. Her irrationality made it so. The terrible power, he thought, of illogic. Of the archetypes. Operating out of the drear depths of the collective unconscious which joined him and her—and everyone else—together. In a knot which never could be undone, as long as they lived.

Ruth said, "Love isn't just wanting another person the way you want to own an object you see in a store. That's just desire. You want to have it around, take it home and set it up somewhere in the apartment like a lamp. Love is"-she paused, reflecting-"like a father saving his children from a burning house, getting them out and dying himself. When you love you cease to live for yourself; you live for another person.” He wasn't particularly popular in the United States during most of his lifetime, but he gained a following in France among the intellectual set; his bizarre works meshed nicely with the postmodern philosophy then current in French academia. The play was directed by Bill Raymond, Hartinian's husband. "It was in response to Linda's loss that we chose Tears," he told the Phoenix, "because Flow My Tears is in fact a novel about grief, and not necessarily just about loss of identity."

Being a super-popular but jaded tv celebrity, Jason is going to have a sardonic attitude about that. And he'll also be something of a fugitive; a pawn in the hands of (what else?) the police state. Things always tend to be much livelier in an alternate reality; kind of like a French farce, only deadlier. And eventually - here - much darker.

This author's works provide examples of:

PDK is mostly famous for the movies that have been made from his novels. His books are a bit obscure, even among many Science Fiction fans, and for a good reason: he's not a very good storyteller.
