Excellent app design – The Meater app is right up there with the iGrill 2 in terms of design and functionality. The cooking time estimate is a really great feature that makes it easy to plan exactly when your meat will be done.

The problem is Bluetooth simply isn’t a great technology for moving around a large areas and between different building materials. It’s hard to know if you will experience this, because every setup and material is different. Many devices, one framework. This was the biggest surprise in testing. We find that the BlueDot is the only device that features it’s own branded application. Although, GrillEye manages to display their logo upon launching the carbon-copied app. Oddly, half of them (Inkbird, AJY and Chugod) do not allow you to change the alert tone. To compound this, the alert tone that they used is very abrasive. UI/UX (User Experience / User Interface) The controller contains a rechargeable battery that can run for up to 30 hours on a single charge, and the unit can also be used while plugged in. Input a different four-character name for each channel display (i.e Beef, Pork, Lamb). Plus, Signals comes with 8 High Temp Silicone Colour Bands that roll onto each end of each probe, so you can see at a glance which input matches with which probe.

More From Thermometers

It has an angled rubber base with a built-in magnet. You can turn thermometer 180⁰ to enable the viewing better depending on where you mount it. Smart Grilling Technology: Upgrade your grilling game with the ToGrill Bluetooth Dome and Food Thermometer, featuring cutting-edge Bluetooth technology. Monitor your BBQ temperatures conveniently from your Apple or Android device with the free app. Not only are they convenient, but they also give you the freedom to enjoy the party while your meat cooks! We’ve put together a list of the top Bluetooth BBQ thermometers, complete with their unique features and benefits. The Inkbird IBT-4XS is a 4-channel, Bluetooth-enabled wireless remote monitoring thermometer with an accompanying smartphone app. It ships with anything from 2 to 4 probes, depending on which bundle option you choose. The iGrill 2 from Weber is one of the most popular Bluetooth thermometers for viewing your grill and meat temperature on your smartphone or tablet.

The Redi-Chek app converts any Bluetooth LE 4.0-capable device into a remote data receiver that monitors your grill or smoker. The control unit is able to measure temperatures from -94 °F to 752 °F (-70 °C to 400 °C), which more than covers the upper and lower temperatures that the probes can work to. Fireboard advertises an accuracy of an impressive ±0.7 °F (±0.4 °C). I decided to put this to the test.It also records your cooking for archive and recipe generation/documentation, allowing you to export that data to other sources. In that respect it is in a unique group. Of the many tens of different thermometers I have owned, used, tested, and reviewed, the original Fireboard thermometer used to be my favorite. That was until they released this version 2! They all held out until just about 75 paces at over two feet each. So, not exactly as the crow flies, the Bluetooth units all held to about 150 feet of obstructed distance which is about what’s to be expected. But, if you’ll be using the thermometer while smoking meat in a separate area, you’ll need a model with a range of at least 300-400 feet. The ThermoWorks Signals can measure from 58 °F – 572 °F (-50 °C – 300 °C). The accuracy changes depending on what temperatures are being measured. ThermoWorks advertise the accuracy as:

Accuracy and range– We used the super accurate Thermapen to compare, and the temperature was already within 1 or 2 degrees of what the InkBird was reading. Pairing your mobile phone or tablet with the thermometer is easy, and if you follow the directions correctly, you should be paired up and ready to go within minutes. With Bluetooth on the other hand, the device someone is using (e.g. Android or iPhone), the version they are running, the location they are in, the version of the app they are running all influence the quality of the experience. After that, we tested the accuracy in various scenarios: first, against a pot of boiling water, then against a vat of water regulated by an immersion circulator. For leave-in models, we compared the readings against a cup of ice and water. Repeating the tests multiple times, we discarded the most outlying result and averaged the remaining readings. During the tests, we also used a stopwatch to observe the speed of each thermometer’s reading. If you do long cooks and like to take naps, you probably rely on the alarm on the thermometer to wake you up. With bluetooth you’ll need to make sure your phone is running constantly, and it’s plugged in otherwise your screen will shut off and you won’t get any notifications. We then tested the thermometers against cooked pieces of meat. Leave-in models recorded the temperature over time, while we tested instant-read models after a prescribed time. Finally, we assessed each thermometer's value based on performance and price. After scoring each category from one to five, we weighted the scores with accuracy counting for 50 percent and arrived at our final rating. Believe it or not, having a thermometer can actually save you money on your grilling. If you cook at too high a temperature, or too low a temperature, you are more likely to ruin a cut of meat than you are to prepare a dish that everybody will want to eat. Ultimately, this means that you will have to prepare other dishes for people to eat if you want to make sure that they have been fully fed. These guys brought their ‘A’ game to play in this product. It helps that they are a known manufacture of all things temperature related, and savvy to the commercial world of cooking. It shows right out of the gate, their base unit is sturdy with a solid feel to it. This base unit is the only one that seems as if you got caught in a light rain it would survive. It came with the two ‘AAA’ batteries installed, pull the little plastic tab and you are off to the races. The app contains all necessary info, including all temperatures, high and low settings, set alarms, and historical data and graphs of cooks.
