McMahon, Christopher (2008). "Introduction to the Gospels and Acts of the Apostles". In Ruff, Jerry (ed.). Understanding the Bible: A Guide to Reading the Scriptures. Cambridge University Press. ISBN 978-0-88489-852-8. Consider his treatment of Matt. 18 and the issue of discipline. France reminds us that this is not some “Manual of Discipline” but a guide for individual disciples on how to live in relation to one another. Indeed, there is no mention of church leaders or officials here. Self-discipline is the fundamental basis of discipline in the community. France is innovate in his interpretation and application while staying stalwart in his commitment to orthodoxy. In the vein of recommending, The Gospel of Matthew, to others I would recommend this commentary to pastors and scholars, yet I would highly recommend pastors, such as myself, to pair this scholarly commentary with one that is one that has more of a pastoral tone. There are many commentaries about Gospel of Matthew available at this moment but The Gospel of Matthew of the New International Commentary on the New Testament series is a very scholarly works worthy of your time. Fr Despard declined to comment, but one of his supporters, Helen Duddy, said: “He feels he hasn’t got any other option than to resign. I think it’s been a kangaroo court and he hasn’t been able to respond or defend himself. There is a broad disagreement over chronology between Matthew, Mark and Luke on one hand and John on the other: all four agree that Jesus's public ministry began with an encounter with John the Baptist, but Matthew, Mark and Luke follow this with an account of teaching and healing in Galilee, then a trip to Jerusalem where there is an incident in the Temple, climaxing with the crucifixion on the day of the Passover holiday. John, by contrast, puts the Temple incident very early in Jesus's ministry, has several trips to Jerusalem, and puts the crucifixion immediately before the Passover holiday, on the day when the lambs for the Passover meal were being sacrificed in Temple. [61] Canonical positioning [ edit ] Saunders, Stanley P. (2009). "Matthew". In O’Day, Gail (ed.). Theological Bible Commentary. Westminster John Knox Press. ISBN 978-0-664-22711-1. These larger-than-life characters surround a central figure, tormented by his work and his marriage. But as his friendship with Frost blossomed, Thomas wrote poem after poem, and his emotional affliction began to lift. In 1914 the two friends formed the ideas that would produce some of the most remarkable verse of the twentieth century. Their writing was far more than just war poetry, but it was World War I that put an ocean between them. Frost returned to the safety of New England while Thomas stayed to fight for the Old. The book itself is quite well written; differing points of view are treated fairly; and the sense of what Matthew is trying to convey is clearly presented here. It is a tremendous work and deserves a wide reading.

As an example, France devotes just one paragraph to the question of authorship. He contends that authorship cannot be proven, but the gospel seems “to make someone like the apostle Matthew as likely a candidate as any”. Nor does he spend much more time on the date of writing, but suggests that it was written in the sixties, while the temple was still standing, thus making better sense of the anti-temple theme found in the gospel. Perkins, Pheme (1997). "The Synoptic Gospels and the Acts of the Apostles: Telling the Christian Story". In Kee, Howard Clark (ed.). The Cambridge Companion to Biblical Interpretation. Cambridge University Press. ISBN 0-521-48593-2. The Gospel of Matthew [note 1] is the first book of the New Testament of the Bible and one of the three synoptic Gospels. It tells how Israel's Messiah, Jesus, comes to his people (the Jews) but is rejected by them and how, after his resurrection, he sends the disciples to the gentiles instead. [3] Matthew wishes to emphasize that the Jewish tradition should not be lost in a church that was increasingly becoming gentile. [4] [5] The gospel reflects the struggles and conflicts between the evangelist's community and the other Jews, particularly with its sharp criticism of the scribes and Pharisees [6] with the position that through their rejection of Christ, the Kingdom of God has been taken away from them and given instead to the church.
