Shoutout to NetGalley and Ten Speed Press for this ARC! I was so excited to see that Hide by Kiersten White was becoming a graphic novel. I think it is such a good book for this medium. I read Hide as an ARC in 2021 and I absolutely could not put it down. This adaptation was no different. The concept of a game of hide and seek in an abandoned amusement park is already fascinating, but add in potential paranormal events and people who are desperate to win the cash prize, you have yourself a good horror. This was a wild little book that's being compared to Fantasticland and Hunger Games. I've not read Hunger Games but, for me, this is no Fantasticland. It just can't compare with Fantasticland's brutality. If I had to compare this to another book I would say it reminded me a bit of Reprieve by James Han Mattson due to the social commentary and the fact that while both are marketed as horror novels they aren't actually overtly frightening. They seem to be making you think more about the characters than the actual jump scares. Personally, I don't mind it. I don't need to be splashed with guts and gore to gain enjoyment from a horror novel. I'm not so much into creature features anymore but this was exceptionally well written and I cared enough about some of the characters that I enjoyed the ride from beginning to end. If this sounds appealing then I strongly suggest giving it a try because you could do a whole lot worse in this genre. 4 stars! ARC provided by NetGalley / Cópia antecipada do livro proporcionada pelo NetGalley (review in portuguese and english). The suspenseful plot combines elements of Thomas Tryon’s classic Harvest Home, Netflix’s Squid Game, and the social commentary of Jordan Peele’s film oeuvre and mixes these with a revelatory pacing reminiscent of Spielberg’s Jaws.”— Booklist

The surprising horror element was thrown into this equation adroitly. It fits with the entire execution. Hide was tons of fun. I just read another book that centered around a groups of kids dying in an amusement park and it was a big let down. So, I was 100% into the twist of this book.Overall: with less characters, this would be so much fun but it was still great try and I enjoyed it till the end. I hope Kiersten White writes more adult horror novels. She absolutely killed it! The atmosphere in the abandoned theme park was creepy as hell, and I thought the slow reveal of the baddie was well done for ultimate tension. I tried this on multiple devices and platforms and the speech text was so blurry it was very difficult to read. Even zooming in just made it pixelated rather than clear. OMG the ARC for this is on its way to me. i might have to get covid again so i can curl up with it uninterrupted. innocent childhood game given a horror movie coating, sinisterizing the phrase "come out, come out, wherever you are..."

A teacher and a novelist, Unsworth worked as a lecturer in English at Norwood Technical College, London, at University of Athens for the British Council, at University of Istanbul,Turkey for British Council, lived as a Writer in residence, Liverpool University, England, and also at Lund University, Sweden. He was a teacher at the University of Iowa's Writers' Workshop, 1999. To start out with, there are WAY too many characters (fourteen!) to keep straight. They are first and often identified by their "identities"-ie "intern" "writer" etc. Then we get names and identities sometimes used interchangeably. When I got to the middle of the book, I wished I would have kept a chart from the beginning, but in the end many of the characters were totally throwaway so it didn't really matter. Modern twist on a legend in Greek mythology (not telling though). Throw in a bit of Hunger Games and ready, set, go! A high-stakes hide-and-seek competition in an abandoned amusement park comes to life in this graphic novel thriller.

January 8, 2023 – @77% I think the story has become confusing, but I will finish it tonight. The narration is still grating, distracting from my listening experience :( The gardens of the state are a fecund wilderness, Eden after the Fall, whose plant and bird life are described in detail by the observant Simon. Simon lives with his dominant sister Audrey whose dead husband had owned the house and estate. Also resident as an unpaid servant is Marion, a young relative of Audrey’s dead husband. The employment of Josh as a gardener sets in play a series of events culminating in disaster. The Broken Room, The Shadow Room & The Reading Room are all located in subterranean vaults in The Bar Below. The rooms seat between two and eight guests, perfect for smaller gatherings. Foster puts up with Lonergan long enough to show her boss, Chief Griffin, that she's truly able to do the job. After Lonergan 's fifth or sixth idiotic decision, Foster reaches out to Detective Li, and, Chief Griffin assigns them to work together.
