Description

Eat, Drink, and Be Merry: The Ultimate Guide to Celebrating Christmas with the Best Drinks Books On The Shelves This was one of the first books I choose from NetGalley, and I chose it because the cover seemed interesting. As the deadline approached, I sort of lost interest. Part of it was how obscure it is; this is a book that isn’t even being published in North America (based on the available information). However, I said I would review it, so I made a point to at least try. I am beyond happy that I did. I loved pretty much everything about this book. This is her story. A true story of resilience, determination, and hunger to learn. A story of a girl on the brink.

The Girl from Nowhere by Eliska Tanzer | Goodreads

Aby tam zažila detskú prácu a násilie si ju našlo vtedy, keď to vôbec nečakala.

Marketing Plan

My mother was a prostitute. My grandmother and great-grandmother were prostitutes. Maybe I should have given the family business a chance.

History Makers: Female Writers Dominate the 2023 William Hill Sports Book of the Year Award Shortlist Kniha zobrazuje generačnú chudobu a problémy s ňou spojené, opisuje to všetko do šialených detailov a prináša príbeh silnej osobnosti, ktorej sa z nej podarilo vymaniť. Ja a životopisy nie sme až takí kamaráti. Až donedávna som dočítala do konca len "My deti zo stanice Zoo" a to len kvôli tomu, že to bola audiokniha.

Heartbreaking to see how from such an early age, Eliska and her cousins attended a class led by their aunt on how to be a prostitue and Desperate to make her own way in the world, Eliska sets in motion a chain of events that will lead her to England, to school, and to within inches of her dreams. There are parts where I cringed at how Tanszer would minimize or explain away the terrible things her parents did to her. In the end, I got the impression she was articulating her feelings at the time because by the end of the story we have a very good picture of her relationship with them. I really appreciated how she articulated the complexities of her relationship with her family. It is so toxic, but she seems to always hold out hope that they truly care. For fans of Educated, this is the remarkable true story of a girl from a Romani ghetto in search of a better life. Eliska Tanzer's memoir of her life growing up as one of an outcast people in Slovakia is a stark reminder of how unequal opportunities can be, not only on a global scale but within countries and then towns. Ancestry or skin colour should not be the factors which decide a person's future practically from their birth, but all too often this is still the case and, other than for a quirk of fate, I would never have read Tanzer's searingly honest memoir because she would never have had the opportunity to write it. She quite possibly would not even have been able to write.

Girl from Nowhere | Eliska Tanzer - NetGalley The Girl from Nowhere | Eliska Tanzer - NetGalley

A scintillating, devastating memoir, and a fiercely witty and unabashed tribute to the toughness of the human spirit.' Damian Le Bas And, so you would think her life improved. Not so much. In some ways, perhaps, but her story is a vivid illustration of the immigrant experience. As I felt after reading American Dirt, I once again feel that immigrants should be venerated for all that they endure in their effort for a better life. Drovane was worse than prison: at least in prison there are guards, and even the worst prisons on earth have some semblance of control and protection. But in Drovane the government and police left us to our own devices, and rarely ventured inside the borough unless it was to raid us for some stupid reason (I’m convinced they used Drovane as a training ground for new police officers), or when they had an unsolved crime and needed a random Gypsy to fill the role of suspect. This happened too many times to count as I was growing up.To, čím si Eliška musela za svůj krátký život projít, je děsivé. Hoci sem tam skončila v deji do minulosti, vždy to malo logiku a dokázala vo mne vyvolat rôzne emócie.

My family are sex workers - education saved me - BBC

Born into a family of prostitutes in a Romani ghetto, she grows up in squalid conditions, with no running water, no education, and no future. To Eliska Tanzer, it means being rented out to dance for older men. It means living without running water. It means not being allowed a job or an education. It means being stuffed into a bare room with all your aunts and cousins, fighting over the thin, stained blanket the way you fight over the last piece of half-mouldy bread.
