My other half swears by it so I thought I’d give it a go last year and… it actually works. No matter if I sat outside in the evening or walked through the Highlands in the early morning, midges seemed to avoid me whenever I used Avon Skin So Soft. Citriodiol® — The active ingredient comes from a botanical oil found in the leaves of the eucalyptus citriodora tree. This is responsible for the repellency of Mosi-guard® Lemon Eucalyptus products. The main component in Citriodiol® is p-menthane-3,8-diol (PMD), making up at least 64% of the oil. DSTL was more cautious. In the key test, the lab said there was “some loss of recoverable virus” on synthetic latex skin an hour after it had been treated with Mosi-guard. However, some virus was still recoverable over a four-hour period. The defence secretary, Ben Wallace, said they were issued on the basis that they would do no harm and could form an additional layer of protection. It is not known how many soldiers have used the spray. Add to your insect protection efforts by covering up in BUGTech™ anti-insect clothing - especially between dusk and dawn.

Cetearyl Alcohol — A waxy solid derived from fatty alcohol. It acts as an emulsion stabiliser and prevents separation of the oils and water. It’s only the females that bite as they need lots of protein to form their clutches of eggs, but while they mostly feed on cattle and wild animals they’re also quite happy to chow down on any passing human that comes within range whether young, old, male or female. Whether you’re going on exotic adventure holidays or simply want to remain bite-free at home and as you enjoy the outdoors, Mosi-guard is an easy-wearing natural option for the whole family. This means you get long-lasting protection from a range of insects in a repellent that’s gentle on your skin and kinder to the planet than chemical sprays. It has been shown to provide up to ten hours’ protection and is suitable, with a pleasant lemony smell. PEG-8 Distearate and Steareth-2 — Waxy solids used as co-emulsifiers for oil-in water emulsions. They work in combination with steareth-21 to form a glossy white lotion. Jeremy Quin, a junior defence minister, said the research found that sprays containing Citriodiol “can kill the virus”.

Mosi-guard is the number one selling natural insect repellent and is used world wide. It is the perfect choice for those who want clinically proven protection without having to expose themselves or their family to harsh chemicals such as DEET. The active ingredient of Mosi-guard is Citriodiol, a natural extract of Lemon Eucalyptus Oil. The London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine found that Mosi-guard is as effective as the strongest available DEET insect repellent. Butylene glycol — This solvent stops the active ingredient, Citriodiol®, from crystallising. It also helps to keep the skin moist and prevents bacteria growth. Smidge keeps midges, mosquitoes, horseflies and other biting critters at bay for up to 8 hours with just one application and it’s also water-resistant, so if you feel the need to go wild swimming you won’t have to re-apply it. That’s me and my trusty bottle of Smidge at the Fairy Pools on Skye.MosiGuard Spray Extra provides impressive long-lasting protection that is comparable to synthetic insect repellent brands. MosiGuard Spray provides up to ten hours of protection and complete protection (i.e. the amount of time it takes for the first mosquito to land or bite) has been recorded as six to eight hours. Smidge comes out of the can as a lotion rather than a spray and it doesn’t feel at all oily on your skin, and I love the fact it smells quite nice too. Ensuring Mosi-guard® Lemon Eucalyptus products are ethically and sustainably sourced is very important to us.Citriodiol® is our own naturally and sustainably sourced active ingredient found in many well-known brands of insect repellent, including Mosi-guard® Lemon Eucalyptus. Eucalyptus Citriodora Oil is the essential oil used to make Citriodiol and it is produced in an environmentally and economically sustainable way. The process can vary on each plantation but in broad terms the following practices are followed: Growing the trees Steam is applied to remove the oil from the leaves. The water used to produce the steam is recycled through the distillation pots and is then used for irrigation. FAMILY-FRIENDLY REPELLENT: DEET has been classified as safe by leading global health organisations and regulatory bodies. Although many reputable sources claim DEET is safe for use in children from two to six months old, we recommend use for children aged three and up for good measure, as they will then be able to communicate if any irritation occurs.
