The Queen's Lord Lieutenants commissioned artist Terence Cuneo to paint the Coronation ceremony and in 1954 Herbert James Gunn painted a State Portrait of The Queen in her Coronation outfit. For starters, Charles will be holding the sovereign’s gold Scepter with the mammoth Cullinan I diamond, which weighs in at 530.2 carats. It’s the world’s largest cut white diamond, and just one of the priceless sacred objects that are used in the coronation service to represent the monarch’s power and responsibilities.

St Edward’s Staff, also known as the Long Sceptre, has a pike of steel at the bottom and is carried as part of the procession into the abbey. Most of the original ancient coronation regalia was destroyed by Oliver Cromwell during the English Civil War and remade during the reign of Charles II, including the staff which originally was a relic associated with Edward the Confessor. The new one was made in 1661. Swords of Temporal Justice, Spiritual Justice and Mercy The Coronation Procession, was much larger in scale, taking the same route in reverse. The Coronation Procession included Armed Forces from across the Commonwealth and the British Overseas Territories, and all Services of the Armed Forces of the United Kingdom, alongside The Sovereign’s Bodyguard and Royal Watermen. In addition, the new coat of arms of The Queen has been hand embroidered on Her Majesty’s Throne Chair using the silk shading technique, which has been applied to the new velvet. Historic Royal Palaces explains: “Until 1649 the Coronation Regalia were kept at Westminster Abbey. In 1649, during the English Civil War, King Charles I was executed, and Parliament decided to sell off the late king’s goods. This was an early act of the republic, of which Oliver Cromwell would become Lord Protector in 1653.Queen Elizabeth II is the sixth Queen to have been crowned in Westminster Abbey in her own right. The first was Queen Mary I, who was crowned on 1 October, 1553.

Historically the Sword Belt is supplied new by the Worshipful Company of Girdlers for each Coronation. His Majesty has chosen to reuse the Sword Belt made for the Coronation of his grandfather, King George VI, in 1937. For last 900 years, the coronation service has taken place at Westminster Abbey. And while much of the service will follow the same protocols as his mother’s coronation, this time, Charles will be crowned alongside his wife Camilla. The Queen sealed this arrangement in February when she announced that it was her “ sincere wish” that Camilla is crowned as Queen Consort when Charles takes the throne. The Queen’s mother was given the same honor when her father King George VI was crowned in 1937. Charles III will be weighed down in gold and diamonds.Mirroring the Sovereign’s Sceptre with Dove, the Queen Consort's Rod with Dove is symbolic of ‘equity and mercy’ and the dove, with its folded wings, is symbolic of the Holy Ghost. The Archbishop of Canterbury will lead The Lord’s Prayer, which the congregation is welcome to say in the language of their choice, for their own act of worship. The choir will then sing a newly commissioned ‘Agnus Dei’; a reflective moment in the Service, during which Their Majesties will receive Holy Communion. The Amen will be sung by the choir, to the Orlando Gibbons tune which was also sung at the Coronation in 1953.
