Description

The P950 will appeal to birders who want the versatility and handling of a DSLR, but without the weight or bother of carrying around a bag of lenses. The 24-2,000 mm zoom range means everything from distant or fly-over birds to butterflies and wildflowers can be subjects. As someone who uses a DSLR, this flexibility within one camera was superb. The sound from the internal mic is reasonably good, though an external mic is a sensible addition to your kit if you want decent audio in windy conditions and to eliminate operational sounds. Flare There’s also a 3.2-inch fully articulating screen at 921k-dots. Sadly, touch-sensitivity hasn’t been included, but being able to position it fully forwards is useful for video and selfies. Performance From the outside, the number of upgrades that have been made to the Nikon Coolpix P950, when compared to its predecessor, the P900, seem relatively few. However, at least two of those upgrades are important - the ability to shoot in raw format and the addition of 4K video recording. The former is particularly important for enthusiast photographers, and was one of the most disappointing omissions from the P900. This camera is fine for those who are prepared to put up with a tiny sensor/camera phone quality. Just not for me.' Rinse repeat.

The flash settings on the Nikon Coolpix P950 are Auto, Auto with Red-eye reduction, Fill Flash, Manual (Full, 1/2, 1/4 1/8, 1/16, 1/32 and 1/64), Slow Sync, Rear-curtain Sync and Flash Off. These shots of a white coloured wall If possible keep the ISO setting to 1600 or lower. If you’re shooting distant fine details you’ll probably want a lower ISO to get better resolution, so a tripod is advisable. I took care to ensure that the front element of the lens was clean, and clear of water droplets, but there’s flare in quite a few of my images when the sun is at 90-degrees to the lens. In fact, from some angles, the P950 doesn’t look great deal smaller than the full-frame Nikon D780.When you have a camera with a long zoom range the first thing everyone does is zoom to the furthest point of the lens. And it’s amazing how far you can zoom when the lens goes to 2000mm. Announced at the very beginning of 2020, the Nikon Coolpix P950 is a new bridge camera. It features an 83x optical zoom, giving you a whopping 24-2000mm (equivalent) focal length - which is the same length as its predecessor, the P900.

Bright NIKKOR lens. With f/2.8 maximum aperture and Super ED glass to help reduce distortion at high zoom. In actual real-world use, it’s likely that you’ll get more than the quoted amount – you can safely expect it to last a day of moderate use. If you do find you need to charge it while on the go, another improvement from the predecessor is the addition of USB charging. Image and video quality No way I could handhold the 200 to 500mm lens on my D7500...but the VR in this P950 is Nikons best ever...they claim it...and I experienced it. One thing to be aware of when you’re setting the exposure is that the P950 doesn’t have a wide dynamic range. Consequently, images tend to have high contrast with deep shadows and bright highlights. Another improvement comes in the shape of a boost to viewfinder resolution. This makes the viewfinder much more pleasant to use, and will again be welcomed by enthusiasts. The fastest frame rate available with the P950 is 7fps, which is reasonably useful for moving subjects, but there are better performers on the market. If you find you’re frequently trying to capture moving subjects, a bridge camera like the Panasonic FZ2000 is likely to be a more sensible option for you, thanks to its “4K Photo” functionality. If you think that the Nikon Coolpix P950 looks big, wait until you extend the zoom lens - the chances of remaining discreet while wielding this are pretty slim. However, if zoom is particularly important to you - such as for nature photographers - then you’ll likely be happy to consider the unbalanced nature of the camera a worthy sacrifice. Run F-P950-V13W.exe to extract the firmware to a sub-folder in the new folder. The resulting file and folder hierarchy is shown below: Since 1982, PCMag has tested and rated thousands of products to help you make better buying decisions. See how we test. I’ve had this camera a couple of weeks now, and it’s great for me. Yes, pictures not that sharp at long focal lengths, but I don’t think that’s the point. I’m enjoying just “getting the shot”, of small animals, birds and scenery you can’t get near. I’ve used 400mm f/5.6 on Canons for many years, and this is completely different! Also use merely as a spotting scope. Actually not for me for moon shots - much better with even a small telescope/mount, but if you don’t have that setup - brilliant and easy.

An impressive 83x optical zoom (24-2000 mm) and 166x Dynamic Fine Zoom (4000 mm) will get you closer to the action without disturbing any unpredictable wildlife. Capture wide-angle images (at 24mm equivalent) of outstanding landscapes whilst also being able to capture super-zoomed in images of wildlife and fast-paced action. With its extensive reach, the COOLPIX P950 is the ideal companion camera for photographers who want to photograph birds or wildlife, or for keen aircraft spotters. The 83x optical zoom offers a focal length range of 24–2000 mm1, while the 166x Dynamic Fine Zoom digitally extends the upper limit to an incredible 4000 mm2. However, if you want greater reach, the P950 has a digital zoom function that takes it to the equivalent of 8000mm (333x zoom). Alternatively, there’s the Nikon Coolpix P1000 which has a 125x optical zoom. With the ability to shoot in raw format introduced, being able to tweak highlights and shadows in post-production is a welcome feature on the occasion that a high-contrast scene might throw it off. For those that prefer to get it right in-camera, dialling in a little exposure compensation can help to lift some dull scenes. We didn’t expect there to be any surprises when it came to image quality from the Nikon Coolpix P950, considering it uses the same sensor and lens combination as its predecessor, the P900. Helpfully, there’s lens-base stabilisation (VR) available for use when shooting still images and both lens and electronic (digital) stabilisation for video shooting. jerste - Yes it does, but unfortunately the camera industry isn't likely to change the habits of a lifetime. 😔Other top-plate controls include the Fn button—it's programmable, and adjusts the continuous drive mode by default. The On/Off button, Mode dial, and the main command dial round out the top controls. I'm a Nikon DSLR user with 75-300mm lens shooting RAW and then edit in Affinity Photo. I'm into aviation photography and considering either P1000 or upgrading my lens to Sigma 150-600mm. Quality will be good but heavy and not portable. I hear what you're saying about RAW-processing. We're in the same boat there. And as an owner of a Nikon D800E, Sony 7RM2, and Nikon P1000, among many other cameras, I'm pretty familiar with how a lot of sensors push and pull in Post.
