His fan’s notes on Aldershot’s game-by-game progress in the Vanarama, AKA the National League, sit oddly adjacent to his dread that a Trump victory in the US election has gone from “virtually unthinkable” to a horrifying possibility. I loved A Lesson in Vengeance by Victoria Lee and was extremely eager to see how their writing transcribed into adult contemporary romance and man… I was not disappointed. That this first book featured a theatre critic who holds the keys to an unsolved murder made this doubly appealing to me. So it's really rather annoying when an ambitious – not to mention irritating – new Constable shows up to work and starts investigating a series of burglaries.

It’s also probably important to know that this is a M/F romance that does feature a trans man, but it refreshingly wasn’t really a focal point of the plot or even presented as one of the most interesting things about Wyatt. The publisher’s blurb gives a lot away, so if you’ve read it, you know that Ely has a one-night-stand with Wyatt before she knows who he is.Do not expect anything new or groundbreaking about making art but it did flesh out nicely Ely (and a bit) Wyatt as characters. Disclaimer: I received a review copy for free via NetGalley, but I am voluntarily leaving my honest review. This follows 2 main characters who have a clandestine meet cute at a queer club on the heroine's first night back in New York.

As the second half gives way to the more elaborate origins of Crystal’s murder, the disappointingly pedestrian pace and further poking fun at the overdone led to my interest waning. This happens sometimes when a book is trying to be Not Like Other Romances (TM), something we sometimes see in trad pub romances that lean into lit fic so that the book will be taken more seriously. I am grateful to author Lynne Truss, Bloomsbury Publishing, Plc and Netgalley for having provided a free advanced reader e-copy of this book. This country’s most accomplished contemporary historian, Kynaston, born in 1951, is also a lifelong fan of “the Shots” with a memory for games, names and anniversaries that has surely earned him his badges as a fully licensed football anorak. The author of three novels and numerous radio comedy dramas, she spent six years as the television critic of The Times of London, followed by four (rather peculiar) years as a sports columnist for the same newspaper. In the process it pays tribute to a gentler time and world of entertainment was variety shows and provincial theatre. Whilst I quite enjoyed the first-half and the humorous course to uncovering one of the two mysteries involved, my appetite was for a more succinct novel and sadly A Shot in the Dark outstayed its welcome by well over one hundred pages! And as Wyatt's walls begin to break down, each artist fights for what's right in front of them - a person who sees them for all that they are and a love that could mean more than they ever imagined possible.

After being thrown out of her home and her Orthodox Jewish community when she was 17, after years of addiction (and the selfishness and dishonesty and thievery that goes with that) Ely (short for Elisheva) moves to LA where she moves on from oxy to full-blown heroin addiction. The next morning, Ely wakes up alone and rushes off to attend her first photography class, reminiscing on the best one-night stand of her life.I was also put off by how heavily AA and NA (and, by extension, the language common to those organizations) were featured in this book. and he never once goes to therapy about it, he just gets into a complicated relationship with someone who is just starting to rebuild their life bc they want to fuck each other so bad it makes them look stupid.

I have been asking for a m/f romance with a trans man that feels respectful but accurate, where he is sexy and hot but takes into account his life experience. A sparkling historical mystery set in sunny Sussex by the sea, perfect for fans of Richard Osman, Robert Thorogood and Elly Griffiths.I was just simply promised that those would be aspects of a different story, an adult queer romance, and I could barely imagine these two together at all let alone believe they're picture-perfect for each other. Fast forward to 1957, Steine is still wallowing in the glory of 1951, taking all the credit for the removal of so many villains in one fell swoop, but he’s a completely incompetent copper, can’t even see what’s right under his nose - his sidekick Brunswick is ambitious and has more idea, but then again he’s not the sharpest tool in the box. Most of the establishment, including the Inspector, are oblivious to the most glaringly obvious clues; Truss has fun with that—both portraying their bumbling ineptitude and crafting dialogue that reveals their incompetence. One thing you notice is how Kynaston the diarist differs from Kynaston the historian, in mood at least. Into this mix arrives college educated Constable Twitten - now here we have an extremely intelligent individual, who aims to make his mark investigating the murder of a much hated theatre critic.
