Please get familiar with the names of the multiple parts of the tool using a Stanley diagram which I will summarise below. Norris-style” adjuster, with lateral locking feature, adjusts both the planing depth and its lateral angle for a perfectly level cut without slant. Make sure everything seats – mainly make sure that the slot in the blade/chip breaker is siting down over the tab and the lateral adjuster pin. If you need a plane and the one in front of you isn't the one that some "expert" says you should get, give it a try.Look for the depth-adjustment nut, and you should be able to tell if it has a diagonal knurling pattern on the outside or not. When learning Paul’s method, it is easy to give a little lift at the end of the stroke that causes the tip of the bevel to be at a steeper angle. If they offer plane blade sharpening they will be able to quickly regrind the correct bevel angle using a Sorby ProEdge (or equivalent) with a ceramic belt. It was missing the Frog adjusting screw clip (I made my own) and the machine screw that holds the clip on.

Don’t worry about the capping iron being a bit skewed and the frog looks OK; as howardinwales says above check that the chip breaker seats tightly to the iron and there should only be about 1 to 2mm of distance from the end of the chip breaker to the plane iron. All surfaces on the old one are smooth and crisp, where there are spots on the new one that look like they finish sanded it with asphalt in the parking lot during a cricket match. To complete the comparison, I thought it only fair to give it a try with the Ray Iles blade and Veritas chipbreaker that are in my type 11. With the screw tight, hold it up and look through the gap between the breaker and the back of the blade against light. Sweetheart™ Smoothing Bench Plane from STANLEY® can produce a finish that equals or surpasses that made by conventional sandpaper. That means it has three dates cast into the bed, and the plane is Type 12, dating between 1919 and 1924. I’ve attached some photos to try and explain my point – the lever cap is pretty much touching the side of the plane on one side, but it’s a good 3mm off the other side. Planes | STANLEY

Suitable for removing very fine shavings from a variety of wood types to leave a smooth finish, when used effectively, the “No. Making great \nquality hand tools has been a STANLEY® tradition since 1843, but in the 1920s STANLEY’s Sweetheart™ range, named to honour long-time company \npresident, William Hart (1884-1915), quickly became synonymous with some of the most sought after and cherished woodworking tools on the \nmarket.These include a handle or knob with red or black paint, stain, steel, or hard rubber depth-adjustment nut. I sharpened the blade a couple of times and it has started skipping/jumping across the wood leaving horizontal lines. I usually tap-adjust the blade with a small hammer, and I really had to whack this blade to get it to move laterally.
