At under two-hundred pages, this is a fast and fun read with one of the best deer hounds ever written into a book. We follow his adventures as he befriends a couple of foxes and tries to get back to his boy, Charlie. Perhaps best known for her classic Worst Witch stories, which she started writing when she was fifteen, she is also a hugely successful picture book author and illustrator. Some other coat colours are documented in historical sources but have definitely been lost (Jödicke 1982).

During the months of Alfie is missing, Alfie and Charlie and have a lot of close encounters of being reunited.I had bought this book originally for my 7-year old daughter, who has started reading chapter books. When Alfie's owner, Charlie, and his mother send Alfie to the dog-sitter's house when they go to a wedding, Alfie is so petrified that he runs away and gets lost. My dog has been a big hit in the class and the children enjoy reading to her and she enjoys all the attention. So he's extremely upset when Charlie goes away and leaves him with a sitter-upset enough that he escapes into the woods.

Initially, I think she was not enthusiastic, and me neither, as we didn't find the initial drawings of the dog with his different ear positions funny, and I was scared that this would be a silly, boring book. But poor Alfie has got lost and he s scared of thunderstorms and being hungry and never seeing Charlie again . I loved the alternating between telling what is happening woth alfie but also what Charlie is doing to try and find Alfie. However, one chapter in and I realised I actually wanted to find out what happened next and so did my daughter. The suspense of scenes with the hunters who know he has a home, but capture him for their own purposes. They do require a stimulus, preferably another Deerhound, and a large area to exercise properly and frequently. The majority of pages are undamaged with some creasing or tearing, and pencil underlining of text, but this is minimal.

Traditionally Deerhounds have the grey hair on their ears stripped back to the velvety-black under fur, but only one of Alfie's ears has been stripped, because, well, it hurt. Chapter One begins, ‘It was the start of a perfect autumn day… the sort of day when only good things should happen’. The Scottish Deerhound, or simply the Deerhound, is a British breed of large sighthound, once bred to hunt the red deer by coursing. The chapters were a good length for the story to be split up into bedtime instalments, and the book was a good length for this age, ie not very long. Illustrations are perfect, the book rolled along pleasantly and made me want to rush out and get a deerhound puppy tomorrow!
