There was enough decent music about in every one of these years, without the need for a double dose of Blondie, FrankieGTH or Duran Duran, no matter how popular these bands were at the time (1984 especially was arguably the best year for music imo, it was jammed packed with all the pop hits).

A routinely great artist, much of Sufjan's universal appeal comes from his skills as a gifted narrator, pairing personal musings on love and devotion with commentary on American culture, whilst welding folk and electronica, the ambient and existential. Hawkins and the collaboration between Patty Smyth and Don Henley provided massive radio-friendly soft Rock – and Chris Rea and Elton John each released a timeless and sophisticated ballad, before great vocals from Des’ree, Julia Fordham and Lisa Stansfield sign off the disc. They all sound absolute great, they've really put some effort in to the mastering of these to make sure they pop in your ears in all the places - a little quiet maybe on the volume, but not really an issue, and assume that's possibly to do with the amount of tracks they've managed to cram on each slab of the vinyl. The same disc includes Mr Big’s international hit ‘To Be With You’, Richard Marx’s ‘Hazard’ and Sophie B Hawkins’ exclamatory ‘Damn, I Wish I Was Your Lover’. Recorded at Hive Mind Studios in Brooklyn, NY, with the help of producer/arrangers Mike Buckley and Vincent Chiarito (both members of Charles Bradley's Extraordinaires) and crack team of a-list musicians, his upcoming album blends heavy arrangements and introspective lyrics with sophistication, leaving the listener in a blissful wash of wonderment. Some big hitters from across the Atlantic make a showing on the second CD including an E-Street Band-free Bruce Springsteen (‘Human Touch’), Bon Jovi (‘Keep The Faith’), and ZZ Top (‘Viva Las Vegas’).

saw Bruce Springsteen release two new albums, ‘Human Touch’ and ‘Lucky Town’ on the same day, and the title track from the former kicks off LP2 – followed by playlist classics from Sophie B. The usual formats apply: 4CD deluxe version in hardcover book with track annotations and quiz, 3LP coloured (green) vinyl and the cheaper 4CD in card sleeve. Not all of these surprises are pleasant (see Nick Berry’s Heartbeat, Billy Ray Cyrus’ Achy Breaky Heart and Urban Hype’s ‘A Trip To Trumpton’) but hey, these were hits at the time! Timeless tracks from Annie Lennox and Richard Marx follow with Bon Jovi’s ‘Keep The Faith’ closing Side One. Prince also had two top 10 UK hits in ’92 (‘Sexy MF and ‘My Name Is Prince’), while Madonna had three (‘This Used To Be My Playground’, ‘Erotica’ and ‘Deeper and Deeper’) but their absence is less surprising.
