Mushoku Tensei is an interesting story about second chances. In his past life Rudy was a 35 year old shut in and basic incel with no social skills that missed his own parents funeral. He dies and is reborn as Rudeus Greyrat. I watched the anime maybe a year or two ago, and I really liked the character development in this story, which is why I decided to read the book, because I was told the anime had to cut a lot and all the character in depth information that I just got is amazing. The anime improves the light novel in how it hides most of the internal life of characters other than the protagonist. In the light novel we get some chapters from Paul's (the father) perspective, as well as Zenith's (the mother). Although they illuminate their motivations, I always feel it's stronger if we don't stray from the main character's perspective. It's more immersive that way. However, even in the anime we do get some parts from the maid's perspective, which makes more sense as she's a very introverted, guarded character who doesn't share those insights. Rudeus who started annoying and mostly a perv, grew so much after getting to his new world. He has been truly thinking about what he did wrong before and you can see his will to do better in this second chance, and he almost seems a different person from the one you’re introduced to in the first chapter. I think what makes this so much fun is that it never takes itself seriously. Even when dealing with the wish fulfillment issues (because let's face it, how many of us have wished we could become someone else?) the book tends to never quite take itself seriously. It's all written in a fairly light hearted manner that helps us take any of the bigger issues with a grain of salt, which also helped me be more sympathetic with our lead character.What I like about this story over other isekai is that not only does Rudy have memories of his past life but along with that he has the same mental issues like his fear of going outside. He is still the person he was bur at the same time you can see him make efforts to be better, and even though he fails a lot, you cant help admire the work he puts in.
