Description

The greatest discomfort for autistic people can be the social one. For me, I was confused by the way people behaved." This inspiring and touching novel really gives you a feel of what living with autism and anxiety is like. 13-year-old M lives a tough life as she struggles coping with anxiety in everyday situations, most of all at school. She describes anxiety as being a beast that stops her from living a normal life. All M wants to do is be like all her friends who she classifies as normal. With her later diagnosis of autism we see M start to open up and talk to people about her problems as she copes with her diagnosis. If you have autism, if you are a sufferer of anxiety, or you know someone who is, this is a perfect read for you. This novel helps you to realise that you are not alone and people DO understand exactly what you are going through. As a sufferer of anxiety this book made me feel like there was light and hope at the end of the tunnel, and with a little support and guidance with life's inevitable ups and downs we CAN have a glorious and fulfilled life. But Sarah Wild, head of Limpsfield Grange, believes there are just as many girls with autism as there are boys. Does your child play pretend or make-believe? ( For Example, pretend to drink from an empty cup, pretend to talk on a phone, or pretend to feed a doll or stuffed animal?) Answer 3 It is very important that autistic people learn to recognise their triggers and find coping mechanisms to help reduce their anxiety. However, many autistic peoplehave difficulty recognising and regulating their emotions. Over one third of autistic people have serious mental health issues and too many autistic people are being failed by mental health services.

Thank you for your time with this patient and his/her family. For more information please visit: http://www.autismspeaks.org/first-concern-action. I like the book M is for Autism because it is interesting to see how different but how the same a girl with autism is. I rate this book 5/5 because it is interesting, funny and exciting. -- Eve, age 8Government prevalence surveys last estimated that around one in 100 people are autistic. However, because these are estimates this is not definite. Other surveys and international estimates have come up with different prevalence estimates. Most of them suggest autism prevalence is higher. The National Autistic Society thinks the UK governments should do more research into autism prevalence to find an updated figure. Until that research is done, we believe that more thanone in 100 people are autistic, which means more than 700,000 people in the UK.

Does your child get upset by everyday noises? ( For Example, does your child scream or cry to noise such as a vacuum cleaner or loud music?)

Summary

If you turn your head to look at something, does your child look around to see what you are looking at? ask people who know you or your child well (like friends, family or teachers) if they have noticed any possible signs you could put on your list It was easy to read (I know, I'm not the target audience) and M is well described. As are the counsellor, the mother, and the other incidental characters. Many autistic people avoideveryday situations because of their sensitivity issues. Schools, workplaces and shopping centres can be particularly overwhelming and cause sensory overload. There are many simple adjustments that can be made to make environments more autism-friendly.

This is a quote from the book and is also why I'm reading books about autism. I'm reading books about autism to figure out what the hell it means to have autism and to be able to identify myself with characters. I, personally, couldn't identify myself with M. The book didn't help me with giving my autism a place as much as I had hoped. These are the main reasons why I'm only giving it 2 stars. There is however one quote that does comfort me: I am a woman, a wife, a mother, a friend, a Top Ranked Book Reviewer and have my own Book Publicity business... I think it would appeal to both autistic teens and neuro typical teens as autistic teens will benefit from realising they are not alone in their anxieties and the NT teens will get an insight into just how hard life is for ASD teens. They might then gain a better understanding of the quiet geeky girl/boy in their class and know that it's not that they don't want to join in, but how hard it is for them. Inclusion is what we are aiming for.We need to harness all this evidence coming to us and marshall it to incentivise more research, more help for schools and Camhs. The House of Lords round table has a quest, said Carpenter: “We need to engage political will, without which nothing will change. There needs to be a systematic review, either under the women and equalities committee or we need to set up a new, cross-governmental taskforce. Is your child interested in other children? ( For Example, does your child watch other children, smile at them, or go to them?) Answer 8 Does your child make unusual finger movements near his or her eyes? ( For Example, does your child wiggle his or her fingers close to his or her eyes?)
