This is a delightful adventure story with plenty of drama, danger and excitement. Noi is having very little fun with his Grandma and it is this that sees him head off to explore his surroundings whereby he finds a cave. Whilst in his cave a storm brews and a surprise visitor drops from the sky in need of help. Through the nursing of this bird and several others that Noi and his Grandma rescue, the two bond. From this moment on the two feel much closer and they then enjoy adventures together and spend their days exploring in the company of each other.

At the start of the story, Grandma is busy doing lots of different activities on her own. Write a timetable to show how she spends each day. One of my all-time favourite nanas from the wonderful world of children's books is the hilarious and scandalous Grandma Swag from Janet and Allen Ahlberg's Cops and Robbers (Ho! Ho!) All the Milly-Molly-Mandy tales have a special place in my heart, but the young entrepreneur in me (who sadly scarpered when I was about 10) especially loved Milly-Molly-Mandy Spends a Penny - no, not that penny, an actual penny!Finding Grandma lost in her own world and going about her own business and too busy to play, Noi finds himself going on his own adventure. But when Noi finds himself trapped out at sea it is Grandma that comes to the rescue and this will be the start of a beautiful relationship.

Granny Bird is Big Bird's paternal grandmother, who first appeared in Episode 0030. She is almost identical in appearance to her grandson except for her clothes, the gray feathers in her forehead, faded eyelids, and eyeglasses. In Episode 3006, it is revealed that Granny Bird is Big Bird's grandmother on his father's side. It is magical, so beautifully observed and tenderly told, though not without heartbreak. Granpa is such a wonderful way to remember the genius, John Burningham. Well, this book is beautiful in all kinds of ways, but the quiet, calm and unwavering character of Julian's Grandma is an utter joy. Write an alternative ending to the story after ‘Then he spotted something shimmering across the sand.’ What could be shimmering? Write some letters from Noi to his grandma before and after his summer visit. Could you write Grandma’s responses?Her name conjures a million gags, in both senses of the word, and her grumpy, cantankerous grossness is a delight - but cross her at your peril.
