From Chretien de Troyes to Malory, the romances tell of Perceval, Gawain, Lancelot and Galahad in their quests for ‘Sangraal’. It also has many of the popular stories like Heracles, Pandora, The Trojan, Ulysses and many many others.

If the chimaera is a goat with the head of a lion and the body of a snake, what exactly is the goaty bit - the legs?

This two-volume work is both a valuable reference book and a magical point of entry into the minds of those who lived so many centuries ago. The reason the discus was involved in the deaths of various mythological figures (such as Hyacinth, Crocus, Phocus, Acrisius, etc. Similar to the Greek myths, there is a monochrome 3-volume set of this series also available, with the three volumes being titled ‘History and Romance’, ‘Heroes and Saints’, and ‘Marvels and Magic’. It was a great adventure, because – whatever you think of Graves’s obsessive myth interpretations – his work on the actual body of Greek mythology is absolutely stunning.

The legends themselves are very dry, descriptive accounts redolent of an essay on the story at hand rather than a retelling. Of course, certain amount of gore is to be expected, but my early age experiences with Irena and Jan Parandowski’s renderings of Greek myths into Polish did not fully prepare me for the extent, intensity and denseness of violence, incest, torture, betrayal, and general human irrationality that is present in Graves’s detailed compendium. Good-bye to All That (1929, revised and republished in 1957) proved a success but cost him many of his friends, notably Sassoon. Illustrator Romy Blümel’s clients include the New Yorker, Condé Nast Traveller and the Guardian Review, among others.Such details have their place - in the footnotes where the interested reader can find them if they wish. Fagles uses a loose five-beat line and I find this translation both clear and sensitive to the magic of literary techniques such as alliteration.

One of this books greatest strengths is also it's greatest weakness if one tries to read it cover to cover. As H is intelligent and interesting, and doesn’t appear to have become zombified from reading Mythos, I thought I’d try it.A lovely two-volume illustrated set of The Greek Myths, compiled and written by the poet and author Robert Graves in the 1950s. It is plain that the Ionian Pelasgians of Athens were defeated by the Aeolians, and that Athene regained her sovereignty only by alliance with Zeus’s Achaeans, who later made her disown Poseidon’s paternity and admit herself reborn from Zeus’s head. My guess would be that most people are reading the abridged version, which keeps only Robert Graves’s retellings of the myths themselves, and excises his commentary. Her illustrations are graphic and expressive, crammed full of Green’s mythical characters and their exploits. Certi passaggi sono volati via prima che avessi il tempo di capire come si collocavano rispetto alle infomrazini precedenti.
