This two-volume work is both a valuable reference book and a magical point of entry into the minds of those who lived so many centuries ago. They think that the copy I picked up in the Reading Room is the current published version and the larger dimensions advertised on the web site are incorrect and refer to a previous edition.It is my humble opinion that this really may be the very best desk reference on Greek mythology that is available. Fagles uses a loose five-beat line and I find this translation both clear and sensitive to the magic of literary techniques such as alliteration.

One of this books greatest strengths is also it's greatest weakness if one tries to read it cover to cover. It is plain that the Ionian Pelasgians of Athens were defeated by the Aeolians, and that Athene regained her sovereignty only by alliance with Zeus’s Achaeans, who later made her disown Poseidon’s paternity and admit herself reborn from Zeus’s head. My guess would be that most people are reading the abridged version, which keeps only Robert Graves’s retellings of the myths themselves, and excises his commentary. Her illustrations are graphic and expressive, crammed full of Green’s mythical characters and their exploits.
