When the new owner of Camp Wonder Falls—the site of the gruesome (and unsolved) Box in the Woods murders back in the ’70s—invites her over to work on the case for his upcoming documentary and podcast, Stevie immediately says yes. All being said, I’m definitely going to go back and read the first three books in this series, because I had so much fun with this and really enjoyed the characters. The gruesome unsolved murder has 80’s slasher written all over it, but its smart dialogue and witty charm make The Box In The Woods feel like your favorite Nancy Drew novel. In fact, Stevie and David’s healthy long-distance relationship was one of my favorite parts of The Box in the Woods.

Funny Murder The Box in the Woods by Maureen Johnson

Well, except maybe when there’s a bit of teen romance angst, but this is young adult so I can’t say that’s unexpected. With his help, Pip digs deeper, unveiling unsavory facts about Andie and the real reason Sal’s friends couldn’t provide him with an alibi.Jackson’s debut is well-executed and surprises readers with a connective web of interesting characters and motives. While the ending seemed a little out there, I didn’t leave the novel feeling like there were any loose ends, and it was satisfying enough. Oh, also, before I forget, for David fans, he is in this one too and I gotta say, I enjoyed him here. It’s filled with fun characters, plenty of humor, a bit of teen angst, and a mystery that’ll keep you guessing until the end. Maureen Johnson’s The Box In The Woods Review

The versatile Johnson is no stranger to suspense, and this twisty thriller will leave plenty of readers anxious for more. In the third book, The Hand in the Wall, the infamous Ellingham Murders were finally solved by our favorite student sleuth, Stevie Bell. The bathroom was outside, about thirty feet away from the cabin, and Claire had to pee more than any child alive. Stevie reads from Sabrina’s diary, which says that Shawn went into stalker mode after she broke up with him. His vomit—or whatever it was—dribbled all down the path to where he had landed and pooled out around him.i'm just so happy that this is so good and now i'm super excited to see what the author has next up, if anything, especially outside of this universe and these characters. The alternating timelines and steady progressions of the plots have never failed to keep me fully engaged. Stevie has anxiety, which for anyone who also has the joy of experiencing it (like myself) doesn’t always make things easy.

The characters are all challenging -- broken in different ways, clear about their limits, interesting and driven. We understand that not everyone can donate right now, but if you can afford to contribute, we promise it will be put to good use. It’s especially appealing since she gets to invite her closest friends, Nate and Janelle, as well as her boyfriend, David, to tag along. A few snippets relating back to the events in 1978 and Stevie’s empathy for the grieving friends and relatives of the dead, who still yearn for answers, provide a strong emotional grounding for the case. The first part of the evening was the most annoying—the four-to-eight shift behind the deli counter.
