However, the art itself isn't really good, or, let's say it could be way better. The character designs are detailed enough but many panels feel cheap or don't contain enough detail, and I guess that it's a bit disappointing for slice of life mangas, because there isn't any action scene or amazing landscape drawings to be expected, so it's a shame that the art isn't done better. Now, it's nothing unbearable, the quality remains acceptable, but that's the weakest point of this manga. However, even though this manga has adult characters regularly talking about work over a smoke, many of the interactions feel recycled from teenage school year, slice of life manga. Whether it’s the 45 year old man getting teased by the 24 year old “cheeky kouhai” or reacting to a change in Yamada’s appearance, he acts like an inexperienced grade schooler, immediately blushing and stammering his words, rather than behaving as the far more experienced adult that he is. Workplace stress and troubles do play a big part in the story as well, so them being adults is still relevant, but that only makes the embarrassed reactions feel more like they don't belong. Based on how he reacts, you'd think he's renting a girlfriend rather than taking a smoke break. When confronted with the possibility that Sasaki might have a wife, her persona becomes even louder and cheerier. There's nothing cringe, no fan service, just funny situations and a lot of denseness from the mc who'll get teased a bit. flat. The age gap between the two leads is probably the most interesting selling point here though.

The Tease: Yamada as Tayama loves poking fun at Sasaki, delighting in making him behave like the fussy older man he is. This has been known to blow up in her face sometimes.

Tomboy and Girly Girl: Yamada with herself. From an implied high-pitched voiced, endlessly polite, and always courteous smiling persona to her real, implied low-pitched, snarky, rough-edged, and almost Perky Goth true self. Like Parent, Like Spouse: What little we see of Yamada's father, he looks (and acts) very similar to Sasaki, her crush. The Mentor: Goto, to Yamada and Obata. In his own brief way, a younger Sasaki filled that role for the teenage Yamada. The best slow burn slice of life and romance series excel with engaging characters, relatable moments, and interesting dialogue, often accompanied with solid comedy. But in Smoking Behind the Supermarket with You, none of that exists. The personalities in here are incredibly flat, the conversations are dull, and the chemistry between the characters is one-note. But I digress, as far as adult romance series go, this is my favorite because of the way it remains so effortlessly pleasing with each chapter even at a minimal level. Little by little, my investment in these characters and their lives has deepened as each shared conversation between the two has wormed its way into my heart. This is a story essentially about creating a dialogue with one another, that through shared intimacy even the most unlikeliest of strangers, a beautiful relationship can be born, a prospect so life-affirming I can't help but love it for its honesty behind that sentiment.Spear Counterpart: Chapter 30 introduces Nishizono, who is one to Sasaki. She is a 50-something mangaka who also has to deal with a very demanding job, and has as one of the cool breezes in her busy life being a gentle supermarket cashier (in her case, it's Oono), whom she treats almost the exact way Sasaki treats Yamada.
