Mulholland Drive fared a little better, partly because the film’s photography takes on a soft, dreamy look; but it was still lacking in definition and a deficit of detail in some scenes. This means that there’s no repeat of the missing Disney+ and Apple TV+ apps situation found with the otherwise impressive Toshiba 50UK4D63B. Finally, it’s worth coming back to the fact that the 50UK3163DB uses a direct LED lighting array (where the lights sit directly behind the screen rather than around its edges) and a VA panel to create its pictures.

The speakers are sensitive enough to present even the subtlest of audio details with conviction and presence, while dialogue is clear and intelligible at all times, no matter how much of a racket there might be going on behind it. The app selection is nowhere near as big as what you’d find on Toshiba’s Fire TV or Android models, missing big hitters in Disney+ and Apple TV+. The cookie is created when the javascript library executes and is updated every time data is sent to Google Analytics. Finally in the negative column, motion handling is only solid rather than great, even with the Tru Motion feature active. Brightness is compromised with all three options, although Dynamic produces the best black performance at the cost of detail.

With Toshiba you can find a TV that fits perfectly into your world, whether you are an entertainment junky, live to be connected or simply want a beautifully designed TV that gives you an out-of-this-world cinematic experience.

The 50UK4D63DB even enjoys a bit of promoted video processing courtesy of Toshiba’s TRU Picture Engine.

The 55QA5D63DB ships with a plasticky, rather drab-looking remote control – though this does redeem itself a bit by carrying a fair selection of buttons for providing direct access to key streaming services. However, a switch to the Dolby Vision version helps for a more refined and controlled HDR performance. The 55UK4D63DB is a solid performer with the complexions of the Glass Onion cast, who look natural enough, though there was a little discolouration – a green tinge in their faces I also noticed with the UK31. The package dimensions of the Toshiba 55UA3A63DB are 1215 millimeters in width, 154 millimeters in depth, and 780 millimeters in height. The screen just doesn’t seem able to support a wide enough colour gamut to ‘keep up’ with its intense brightness, leading to some bright tones looking a bit thin and washed out versus some rivals. So eye-catching is the 50UK3163DB’s HDR performance, in fact, that we’re confident that if you were to put it side by side with any other TV in its class, its HDR efforts would leave its rival looking drab and dull by comparison. Try not to watch from more than around 30 degrees off axis if you don’t want to see a significant reduction in contrast and colour saturation. The way you can simply shift up or down from the home menu to access the TV’s settings and other features is actually pretty inspired, too. The set’s motion processing, known as Tru Flow, can look unreal at its medium setting but not too artificial.

The mid-range is quite open and expressive, and escalates decently well to meet the challenge of big action movie moments. The audio gets peaky quickly as if the equipment is being pushed far too hard and it comes across harsh and tinny in the manner of a bad Bluetooth speaker. The 145-year-old firm turned its back on personal computers in June 2020, leaving televisions as one of its few remaining consumer-facing sectors. With the SKY box powered on, select the Menu on your Toshiba remote, select Installation from the on screen menu and then select Analogue Tuning.

Shadow detail is lacking too, the detail on Poirot’s jacket makes it look all black when the jacket is actually two-toned. This enables it to deliver much more of the brightness, both in small ‘peaks’ and full-screen situations, that high dynamic range content thrives on. They feel solid and match nicely with the bottom edge of the panel, which itself is a similar looking band of chrome. There’s no faded or wan look to skin tones, while heavily saturated hues don’t tip over into gaudiness or unnaturalness despite looking more vibrant than might have been expected.
