The controller of BBC 4, Richard Klein, revealed the decision making process behind getting Madness to play the event. “I can think of no better band than Madness to help celebrate a golden age of television coming out of the BBC's Television Centre, and I am really pleased that one of Britain's finest groups has agreed to come along and help BBC4 celebrate in fine style. Madness, as always, are one step beyond!" The Beatles made music history during their 10-year reign, making a huge cultural impact with their influences on music, fashion and even film. It therefore came as no surprise when she was appointed an OBE by the Queen for her "tireless charity campaigns and championing of humanitarian causes". Madness have been national treasures in Britain for well over 40 years. Often referred to as the ultimate singles band (since 1979, they’ve enjoyed 31 Top 40 hits, plus 17 in the Top 10 and one No.1), they’ve produced 11 studio albums, a film (1981’s Take It Or Leave It) and remain, to this day, one of hardest gigging groups in the UK. In 2000, the band received the Ivor Novello Award from the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors for Outstanding Song Collection.

On the road with the trailblazing record label 2 Tone". The Guardian. 25 April 2021 . Retrieved 27 September 2021. Throughout 2017, the band played at several festivals and concerts worldwide including mainland Europe, Asia, and Australia. In April their first Australian gig at the Fremantle Arts Centre in Western Australia sold out, necessitating a second gig the following night. In August, the band hosted their own "House of Common Festival" for the second year on Clapham Common. This was the band's only London gig of the year. [65] In April 2021, following some special videos created during the COVID-19 pandemic, Madness announced their first global live stream, titled "The Get Up!", to be held the next month. It featured live music and comedy from the group and Charlie Higson, pre-recorded at the London Palladium. [73] During the live stream, the band was accompanied by Roland Gift of Fine Young Cannibals and Paul Weller of the Jam and had a cameo by Queen Elizabeth II, played by Mike Barson. [74] They announced their 2021 tour, The Ladykillers Tour, the next day, to be held alongside Squeeze. [75] 2023: Theatre of the Absurd Presents C'est la Vie [ edit ] In October 2014, Cathal Smyth, aka Chas Smash, left Madness to pursue a solo career. His debut solo studio album, A Comfortable Man, was released on 11 May 2015 by Phoenix Rising Recording Co. Although Smyth's departure was characterized at the time as a 'break' to concentrate on his solo career and not necessarily a permanent departure, Smyth has not rejoined Madness in the years since the break was announced. Madness has continued as a six-piece. INXS have won numerous awards throughout their career including two BRIT Awards, five MTV Video Music Awards, six ASCAP Pop Music Awards, and six ARIA Awards. The group also received the ARIA Outstanding Achievement Award in 1989 and were inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame in 2001.Laurence Olivier Awards– Chronological list of winning musicals".
