She is frequently berated for breaking any of his fussy house rules, as well as for her lack of looks, confidence and friends, even though she lives in a large house and attends a private school.

I liked that the show proved to be so important to the plot, as I thought at first it was just an odd little quirk of Beauty's. He obviously felt a certain amount of love and affection for his daughter and wife, and wasn't only a villain. The Illustrated Mum won the Guardian Children’s Fiction Award, the 1999 Children’s Book of the Year at the British Book Awards and was also shortlisted for the 1999 Whitbread Children’s Book Award.

She has written over 70 best-selling books, and several have even been adapted for TV – most famously The Story of Tracy Beaker. Beauty and her mother, Dilys have a great link unlike her father Gerry was the most spoiled and bad tempered person they have ever met! Of course we want Beauty and Dilly to stand up for themselves and of course it's cathartic to see them finally succeed and even find happiness and support through sweet bunny-shaped baked goods after all the hell they're put through.

I did really like the character of Mike and the whole seaside part was blissful, albeit very unrealistic. He has produced over sixty of his own titles, including much-loved favourites Ketchup on Your Cornflakes and Shark in the Park. Worse than the teasing in the playground, though, is the unpredictable, hurtful criticism from her father. Beauty's birthday is approaching and she is dreading it, however Gerry appears to turn over a new leaf and act like an ideal father. Eventually, after an unbearable birthday party, amidst fears that Dad’s temper is out of control, Mum and Beauty run away.Cookie is a children's novel written by English author Jacqueline Wilson, published in October 2008 by Doubleday.

The best thing about this book is that it is not just Beauty that grows as a character - her mother grows too. i have read this a week or 2 ago and i recommended it to all my friends and some parts really caught me at the heart like i cried about birthday and screamed at the book at the dad he sucks if he was real i would hope he would die in HELL. Beauty is asked to go on 'Watchbox', a talent show that Skye really wanted to go on, due to the rise in popularity of her mother's cookies.Maybe it’s nostalgia goggles (was my favourite when I was younger) but it was just a nice read despite the whole abuse storyline. I love the way all the characters develop and grow (Mum and Beauty) and some that never learn (Dad). Wilson's fluent style makes this an almost effortless read, but dark themes of domestic abuse and self-esteem are sensitively tackled in this redemptive tale of biscuits and rabbits. Money is never a problem; Dilly never actually sells more of her jewellery in the story and mother and daughter are never separated. This is one of my favourite Jacqueline Wilson books, and I think Beauty is one of my favourite of her characters too - I find her very relatable, especially her vivid imagination, her awkwardness, and her love of Sara Crewe from 'A Little Princess'.
