Choose an all-purpose sewing thread in a color that matches your fabric. Use a hand-sewing needle to sew along the seams with a small running stitch. How to Make a No-Sew Scrunchie Smooth and shiny fabrics like silk, satin, or polyester blends can be quite slippery. So they might not hold your ponytail as tightly as other fabrics. Hand stitching does take a little time so it's a good tv job. In other words, put on your favorite tv show and hand stitch during the ads. If you used Lycra fabric for your DIY scrunchie and don't have a pressed edge then just put one end into the other. Overlap it by ½" (12mm) so the inside raw edge is hidden. Step 7: Insert ends Machine Stitching a Scrunchie Now that the elastic is inside the tube, it’s time to sew the remaining opening closed. For a truly seamless finish, you can sew this opening by hand. Using a blind stitch, or an invisible ladder stitch, stitch the remaining opening closed.

This method will also work with elastic bands (although I recommend hair ties because they’re less likely to snap). If you don’t have a sewing machine, you can use hand sewing or a hot glue gun for a no-sew method. The steps are still the same. If you are a beginner sewer, then learning to make your own scrunchie is a fantastic project to start with. Scrunchies also make really nice gifts, as you can personalize them by selecting the perfect fabric for your friend or family member. What is a Scrunchie? Then, once you’ve made the bow piece, tie it onto the scrunchie. I highly recommend securing the bow with a few hand stitches or a dab of fabric glue. When I filmed my video, I just tied the ends in a knot. A few people commented that it would add bulk, but really the knot is so small you won't feel it. I also had a few comments that the knot would come undone, but I've never had that happen. If you don't want the knot to come undone, then just pull tight. Do what is easiest for you and fits your time schedule and patience level. Personally, I always take the fastest route! Step 6: Stitch the ends Step 7 - Final Stitch of the EndsHere are the instructions for cutting out your fabric and elastic. Plus, I’ve given you some advice on customizing the size of your scrunchie to fit your style. Fabric Topstitch around the edge of the bow shape. If you don't want to topstitch, you can just handstitch the gap closed.

Match up the folded edges, so the hair tie is inside the fabric. If this looks confusing to you, scroll up to watch the video tutorial. If you don’t want to sew the opening by hand, you can sew the gap closed using a sewing machine. To do this, fold the opening closed, and secure it with pins. Using a straight stitch, sew very close to the edge of the fabric. There will be a small seam, but I don’t think you’ll notice it much while you’re wearing the scrunchie. You don’t need to turn anything inside out. You don’t need to close a hole at the end. I’m excited to share this! SIZES - The smaller sizes have less fabric and slightly shorter elastic for a more subtle effect. The larger scrunchie sizea are more of a traditional design where you see lots of fluffy, gathered fabric around your hair.

The best thing about making DIY hair scrunchies is that it uses the smallest scrap of fabric. Rummage around your fabric scraps bin (yes, I know you have one that is overflowing) for long-shaped scraps. Step 3: Clip the corners. Turn the scarf right side out through the remaining gap. Press if desired. Note: If you are using a velvet fabric like I am, you might want to use more pins than normal to prevent the fabric from shifting under your presser foot.
