A Terrible Kindness is a novel about grief and forgiveness; of misplaced love and decisions that have long-lasting consequences. But compassion can have surprising consequences, because - as William discovers - giving so much to others can sometimes help us heal ourselves. In retrospect, I wonder whether their reluctance was more about what was on the other side of the gates than the difficulty of getting through them.

Not only did I find myself able to play it with both hands, but before long, I didn’t even need the music. The organist played hymns that we sang along with, and soft, beautiful music to distract us as the curtain closed round the catafalque.

Any author who adopts this terrible event as a premise for their novel will have access to ready-made, deeply felt emotion that must be used carefully and not exploited.The tragedy of that day was compounded by what happened afterwards – people from all around the world contributed to an appeal fund to help those who had suffered loss. His father died when he was eight and after being encouraged by his mother to develop his musical talents rather than go into the family business, he was accepted into a chorister school in Cambridge two years later. A few weeks later I received a cheque from Birmingham city council in payment for my services and genuinely thought no more of it. The story opens with the Aberfan disaster and that’s when we first meet our main character 19-year-old William Lavery, who has just completed his training as an undertaker so he can join the family firm.
